Scwhinn Stingray

In 1979 or 1980 my grandfather bought me a stingray. Yellow frame with red logo and red seat (with yellow logo and stripe).

Red grips.

No springer front end, or gear shifts.

Had coaster brakes.

Don’t know the model name from that vintage.

Loved the bike. It was the only bike I ever owned as a kid. Rode the piss out of it...TRIED to ride it like a BMX bike.

Had a knobby tire on the back.

I was having a rummage sale in 1999 and some a-hole stole it from the back of my garage. It was NOT for sale.
I am trying to track down something as close to what I had as possible, if not identical.
Can anyone steer me in the direction of something that will replace my bike.

I REALLY miss my bike.

I've tried Ebay and googling some collectors. Have not seen one that is the same vintage or colors as mine.

I'll see if I can come up with a pic of it. Dang I wish I had it...I see they are worth big $$ and it's gonna be hard to get one for a reasonable price.

I hope it wasnt a 1978 Stingray "Sneaker".
That is one of the more rare ones.
They were offered in lighter colors and shades with red accents.
Coaster brakes, standard wheels,single speed.
The tale tell sign generally is the seat had a red lace designed into the two tone upholstery.
I had a Bananna peeler (cheater slick and all) as a child and have located some for a replacement, but Im not at a point in my life to drop that kind of money on a bike I will not ride.

Good luck with your search.
Hopefully karma will catch up with the b@stard who took it.

Well he showed up in the local paper about 2 months later on sexual charges....I did the best I could but my bike was never recovered.

I saved up $100.00 when I was in jr high and bought Duster wich was basically the same bike but all black. I gave it to my nephew and it got stolen too.I bet I rode a thousand miles on that thing. :)

Schwinn 'banana' seat sting ray, 20" wheels... $2.50 from a garage sale in the late 60's. Rode it for another 12 years or so.

About the only thing left that was still original when I got rid of it was the frame. BMX'd it all I could without actually changing the frame. Delivered newspapers on that thing for 3 something years (back when you actually delivered them via airmail...lol...crash, screen door dent, opps, sorry about the flower pot.. j/k, actually got pretty good at the toss.)

Great times on that bike. Finally got a "10 speed" (WOW is right), and just never had the affection for it. Damn near lived on the Schwinn in those years.

Good luck Scott...thanks for the memories.

you guys put the ball cards in the spokes and build jumps outta old wood and cinder blocks?

No to the bball cards but definatly yes to the old wood and cinder blocks. Gravel piles were fun but dangerous.:D

We had jumps stashed in the weeds all over the place when I was a kid. We had about 5 miles of gravel roads to ride...and trails in between them. What a blast.

The day I got it....

I always wore I a tie when I rode my Sting Ray:face-icon-small-win Mine was metallic blue with a white seat 2 speed (rear end?) and a tall sissy bar, I loved that bike...Unfourtunately that is when my modding disease started. it ended up red with BMX wheels tires etc, it sucked frame was way to heavy. I gave it to my brother.
