Scuffed jugs

Hey my 2009 assault only has 40 hours on a brand new short block and i noticed some very minor scuffing on the pto side piston. So I am ordering The fix kit before this goes any farther but i am wondering if that minor scuffing will have harmed the jugs at all? Will i need to get them redone? Or are the jugs still going to be in good shape after the very small scuff marks i am seeing on the piston?
I know I wont truly know for sure until I tear the engine down but i just want an idea of what to be prepared for.

Also Is it ok to run the Fix Kit without installing a fuel controller? Or do I have to buy one?

Thanks for any thoughts guys!!

should be able to just hone them out and go ask shawn when you order the kit he'll help you out. no power commander is not required. its really the same motor just longer pistons and the shim makes up for that so no port changes. just very reliable after install. but again ask shawn your questions. hes a good man. very helpful to me when I installed mine. good luck

I did an 08 that was scuffed pretty good on the pistons recently and the jugs were fine. It will just be a matter of checking it when you lift the cylinders off.

I pulled the cylinders off today and I was happy to see that there was no scuffing at all on the walls. The pistons were actually scored more on the intake side then the exhaust side. I am very glad i tore the sled down now before there was anymore damage. Kinda ****ty that its in the middle of winter but i was not going to be able to ride for the next couple of weeks anyway.

Any pointers for break in with the new kit?

The photo on the left is intake side and on the right is exhaust side.

Your pistons look identical to what mine did when I installed the fix a month ago!!! Same exact places where its scores in the same shaping! I had 2100 miles on mine. But the local guys at the 148th fighter wing motor pool said my cylinders looked immaculate; no need to hone even though pms reccomends it. I just can't believe how identical our motor's pistons look. Hope it works out for you as well as it has for me! :face-icon-small-hap

Tips: warm it up to 120 f for three heat cycles. Kill it and let it cool completely before the next heat cycle. Also let it warm up fully every time before doing anything. mix your gas, and constantly change your RPMs while driving. Don't hammer on the throttle or put alot of strain on the motor until you reach about a hundred miles; then ride like normal and enjoy!

It's also important to carry extra plugs because if you run The mix ratio pms reccomends on the sheet that came with the fix for installation, it's Very easy to fowl plugs.

Hope this helps!:face-icon-small-hap

You want to hone your cylinders any time you install new pistons because there will be new rings that need to seated properly. It only takes a few minutes and I think it's about $30.

I think you mean "hone your cylinders" yea you should and some small motor shops will do it for free even. It takes like 3 min to do. All it does is help buff the surface smooth and thus removes any small scratches or scoring. This smooth wall is optimum for break in of pistons and rings but if a machine shop says its already as smooth as they could make it, they didn't see a need to hone it with the chance there always is of messing it up. Can't improve on perfect type of thing. Of course I recommend honing your cylinders, I'm just saying in my case I didn't need to.

Hey I installed the fix kit last week and i brought the sled to running temps 3 times before riding it. I took it out for a quick little ride today and she is running great!! Thanks for all your input guys!!!:peace:

I would say about 60 miles and you can start to ride it harder and harder 80 miles leter have it but as stated before very the throttle.

glad to hear it! good luck! be safe have fun. as for the break in Do it your way. I warmed it up a couple times then rode the **** out of it. break it in like your gonna ride it. as long as you premix a little oil in the first tank of gas. my thought is the harder you run it the better the rings seat. stretch her out and make the rings reach the full stroke (if that makes sense). but this is a whole new subject! glad you got her running!!!
