Saw Dr.John at Dakota Jazz Club last nite.

Prob'ly nobody cares, but it was a good show.
Most people would recognize his 70's hit "In the right place at the wrong time" if you heard it.
His style is New Orleans cajun blues/rock/funk/jazz fusion.

Dr. John piano & B3 organ, Plus a drummer, bass, lead guitar.
A lot of music for a quartet. Side-man players were young guys, maybe age mid-30's tops, and were excellent.
Dr.J's song lyrics are always risque, and funny.

One example, "how come my dog don't bark when you come around?" LOL. IOW, the visitor has been "messin' 'round" his woman.

Located on 10th & Nicollet Mall, downtown Murderapolis, ummm...Minneapolis.

Dr.John looks older than he is, 69, he's only 2 years older than me. :eek: Must be all those road gigs and one nighters.

Somebody will ask why did I go there? Well, the GF/SO and I met in 1993 at a jazz club show, and it's been about 3-4 years since we went to a music venue.
We had a blast. :beer;

The Doc is wicked! One of the best pno/organ players around. He's recorded with a lot of major players. I've seen him twice!:beer;:beer;

He had the organ right behind him, so he could play both piano and organ simultaneously, but he only played about 8 measures on the organ the whole show.
Hammond B3-Lesley speakers one of my favorite sounds.

Did you guys sit on the upper level? That is a cool place to see anyone good. The seating is so tight to the performer.
If you get a chance, check out this guy there.

His piano skills are unreal.:)

Yeah we were on the upper level, although "close" to the stage, still had to stand to see him. (Too close to the stage for the upper level.)

It was our first time to the "new" Dakota :p , so we could only figure out so-much about seating on their website.
Will do better next time.

We have been to their old Bandana Square location many times.

I'm not much of a fan of latin jazz, too much percussion, banging on pots and pans sort of thing. Not saying anything against the musicianship of the piano player.

Guess 'cause of my age and the music I grew up with, I'm more interested in "straight ahead " jazz, and big bands..

The new location is nice. We were there a few times before I even realized that they could remove the wall. That was quite the shocker when the wall started to move right in the middle of the performance.

This guy isn't really a traditional latin jazz type. It is more just straight up banging the keys.

Wall? Which place? The stage at the new place had a black curtain or some-such in back.
Is that what you mean?
Maybe they open it up for acts with more musicians.:confused:

The old place had those wooden lattice thingies between those columns that were pulled up sometimes. Seating at the old place was really messed up.
Huge bar right in the middle, WTH.

We got to get to the Artists Quarter in St.Paul again too. Lots of good acts there. It's owned by the Peterson family and some other metro jazz musicians.
There are many real good local musicians too.

Oh.... food prices at both places was/is breathtaking. :eek:
I had 1-Heinekin, $6.00 please. GF had 1- bar-well gin tonic, was $7-8 bux. Oh well, a good time was had.
