Satellite phones?

I'm researching getting a satellite phone.

What works, what doesn't?
Pros/cons?

Any experience or tips appreciated.

Right now you definately do not want to go with Globalstar. The outer skin(core)on their satellites are breaking apart in space; meaning you're lucky to even have service for 10-15 minutes/hour. Globalstar is set for a new launch of fresh satellites in mid 2009 but no promises have been made. Steer towards Iridium. Guaranteed service 24/7. Their satellites are doing well in space; outer core made from a better material. Hope this helps

Ive used the Iridium 9505A out at sea around Bjørnøya (a little island between Norway and Iceland), and it was good coverage, good sound quality, no lag and it was'nt very expensive for calls either... I have'nt tried any other satelite phones...

I actually got to talk to a rep from Globlestar at the last sled show I went to.

that poor guy was ready to quit after 5 min of talking to me. he started sweating and eventually walked away in shame.

I made him admit his company should face criminal charges for selling a safety device that doesn't work. I explained to him how his company's lies and fraudulent practices have risked my life. he had to agree.

that company is a crooked company no different than the ones that run phone scams on old people(just better lawyers).

We ride with a Iridium, no problems just spendy but whats a grand compared to getting your a$$ saved in a pinch.
