so i bailed
ok so lets get this story started. we rolled into deer mt. snow park about 9ish saturday, they were having dog sled races so the place was packed. we got there just in time to get one of the last parking spots. got unloaded and hit the trail, our group got kinda mixed in with another so it took a little bit of time to get everyone sorted out and together. pow was swwwweeeetttttt!!! tastiest stuff i've ridden this year by far. got everyone together and did a little field busting before we headed up into the trees. got up to a nice big climb and started ripping, snow was pretty soft, hard to keep your mo up if you hit any kind of and obstical. luckily most of the cuts are so clear theres hardly anything to hit except for those broken off trees sitting just beneath the surface
after totally shredding that climb we were off to places unknow. found quite a few places just off the beaten path that were untouched, awesome. got to one big climb up by ash creek? and carved all the way up and all the way down. nothing like S turning downhill watching the pow fly over your hood. by now the LESS skilled rider was going down like the prices at an after xmas sale. he was riding an 02 mountain cat so we nick named him artie. felt i owed artie a little help since he is a cat guy so headed down to the bottom to help him out. he got stuck at least 5 times in 50 yards. finally got him set and he started making his accent, he finally made it and rolled his sled right at the top
finished the day after doing a little more highmarking and bank cutting. got back to the truck just before dark and on E, couldn't ask for anything more.
now sunday was a different story, found my hardcore riding partners had disappeared and left me stuck with the medford mangina riders
the weather sat. was mostly sunny with clouds rolling through here and there. sunday brought a light snow and blowing wind. peeps were crying about how sore they were and if the snow got any worse at least one was gonna wait in the truck while we rode
this was before we even left the motel! wow best snow of the year and you don't want to ride???????? a very sad state of affairs indeed! we had talked the night before that we were gonna keep the group moving since we spent a lot of time sat. waiting and digging out artie.
so we planned on following the ridge out of the first big climb we hit the day before. got there and started following the road out, right past the climb the road was wind blown and gone. mark somehow managed to dismount his sled just as the road went to a 45 degree angle and it took a ghost ride down into the trees. luckily it only went about 30 feet before it lightly wedged itself into a tree. so its time to sidehill the blownout road!!!!!! this is where i'm starting to get pumped, this is my kind of riding. nothing like knowing you've got one shot at making it or your gonna be spending some serious time trying to get out of the trees, perfect! i was the second rider when mark left the road so now i get to be in front, which of course is my favorite spot. could see up to the first corner, was about 100 yards of nothing but slope, does it get any better?
so i roll up on one ski and i'm off. nothing like it in the world, absolutely can never get enough of sidehilling. so i'm just eating this up, can it get any better, got to the corner and carved around it. well yes it can, around the corner and our "slope" goes right across the middle of a huge cut!!! i'm in heaven, already been on one ski for at least 100 yards and now i've hundreds of yards to do the same!!! busting over the humps and windlips on one ski, had to even drag my shoulder in a couple of the deeper ones to keep my line. got all the way to the other side of the cut and it actually flattened out enough to stop and see where everyone else was at. as soon as i rounded the corner i knew there was only one, maybe 2 others in the group who would be able to follow. but willing they weren't, all i saw were skidoo lights sitting all the way back at the corner
one of the doo's didn't quite make the corner and got sent down to the bottom of the cut, a couple of other were stuck trying to get to the corner. so i waited to see if anyone was gonna come and join me but this was to be a party of one!!!
so i turn around and head back and we all meet back up at the bottom of the first climb. the group didn't seem to be all that interested in my line picking so we decided to head down and try and find more even ground. i haven't rode shasta that much and so didn't get to do much leading sat. so we get to where the road ends and everyone is trying to decide which way to go. i decided it was time to quit dinking around and ride so i bailed down the hill
don't think most in the group really wanted to follow my line but hey we're here to ride right! why ride the road when theres so much open down there. i cut back up through the trees trying to hook back up to the road but it got too tight and i noticed my group had left me on my own so figured i'd better go find them
got hooked back up and headed down another trail came to the top of another climb and bailed off that one. decided i'd had enough of riding trail! got the gang all back together and found a couple of real nice roads that were so fluffy, light and untouched that i swear god must have made them just for me. followed ted down another road and came to a big fallen tree, was sticking up too much to try and highmark the bank over it. so ted decides we should turn around and head back, the road wasn't very wide and he got stuck. i'm looking over the side, lots of trees and steep, i remember thinking why would you not want to go down there so i bailed.
nothing like plowing down a nice steep slope with lots of trees, this is my kind of riding. got down to the bottom and it came out at the top of another cut. stopped and waited but seems my group once again decided my line was to be less traveled, so i headed back up. talked everyone into going down, got to the edge of the cut and the skid road we were on ended. so everyones trying to decide which way to go so looked kinda like the road went down through the trees so i bailed
hit one of the main roads just a couple hundred yards down. we were trying to get back to one of the cuts we had been above on the upper road. finally got there and it was perfect.
a lot of the climbs down there are so wide open that it kind of gets a little boring after a while. this one was different, lots of hump, bumps and trees!!! felt like home, so me and ted start marking it up. after one or 2 pulls i started looking up and thought heck i can sidehill the crap out of that thing and so i did. went up about 3/4 of the way and across i went. loved the humps and carving aroung the stumps and trees. so now i'm totally pumped hit the bottom and decide its time for some one handed sidehilling. head back up to about 20 feet above my first cut and its on. think peeps all the way back at the snow park heard me yelling as i ripped sideways across one handed, even did some waving to the peeps down below
was the best pull of the weekend. so ted heads up and gets stuck, i decide to go up and help, after all he is my stuck buddie
i get up there and stick mine right below his. i didn't actually realize this was the cut we were above until jerry and mark come riding down the road and come down to help from above. we got out and i guess they voted mark the guy to tell me they were ready to go. wtf, its not even noon yet and they're ready to go????????? guess my pushing the group along was not as appreciated as i thought
the tears were freezing on my face as we headed back to the snowpark
all in all was not the worst day, got to do some unreal sidehilling and that last one handed pull was just too sweet!!!
got back to the snowpark and headed out, just before the oregon border it start raining pretty hard so jerry pulls up trip check and diamonds getting pounded, yeah! gonna check the snowcam when i'm done here and see how much they got. heres some pics for all of you to drool over
