same car, same commute, same tires 5mpg less this summer than last??

What gives?

I'm barely breaking 31-32 mpg average using the same car, same tires, same gas station driving the same. Last year I was 36-37, with some hyperdriving I could break 38 mpg!

I'm wondering if they snuck more ethanol in the pumps? 10% is legal but I'm thinking like 25%.

I'm going to switch to synthetic oil, and run synthetic grease and tranny oil as well as synthetic gear oils for a little experement.

Also going to over inflate my tires a bit to see if I can offset the additional wear with fuel mpg savings.

I drive 100 miles per day, so it'd add up quick!

Watch where you are filling up. Ive noticed down in the tacoma area when I use shell my MPG drops about 3 mpg . The only thing I can fig is they are putting more ethonal in their gas than the other places.

I always fill up at the same Chevron station for many years.

Not a lot of gas stations to choose from, I could drive a mile out of my way and fill up at the Exxon to see if there is any difference.

thats about all I got for choices on gas.

Drive a mile to save 5 or 6 bucks a tank? Depends what your time is worth. I avoid chevron, I've gotten crappy gas from them to many times. Ive been hitting up the safeway of all places down here, as soon as I changed from shell My aver. shot back up to where it should be.

when was the last time you changed your fuel filter? or run some cleaner through your injectors?

also how many miles are on the car compared to last year?

Id try checking the filter and pour some sea-foam and clean the injectors and what not.. are they the same tires from last year (maybe less tread so more rubber on ground-rolling resistance) I dont know.. what to tell you

What kind of car? How many miles? Clean air filter/fuel filter/tune up.

2005 Dodge Neon SXT 4 dr 60k ish miles new tires last summer, still 95% tread.

air filter always replaced before it needs it, its new now.

only difference I can think of is I had the tires inflated right up to the max according to the print on the sidwall of the tires. When I had them rotated I think perhaps les schwab aired them back down to 32 from 40 psi. Les Schwab says I had them over inflated (didn't account for when the tires heat up and gain pressure)

I think I'll over inflate them again, they were better in the corners that way :) prolly gain back some MPG too even if I do have to buy tires a bit sooner?

its rural county road driving, up over boulder crk road down into curlew and up towards chesaw WA. :(
no traffic to speak of though so it's hammer down.

Its a family sacrafice I choose to do, keep my wife off the roads with my kids, keep them close to their school and babysitters.

I am getting SICK of it though

First thing I would do is put new wires and plugs in, make sure they're gapped right, then I would have a shop test your O2 sensor for you. Typically an O2 sensor lasts between 100-150k miles, but it's possible one could fizzle out earlier. I do know that if your O2 sensor IS bad, you will see a significant drop in your fuel economy.

try these ive herd only good things about this.

try this and adding an injector cleaner to your gas. if i remember right the neon had multi-port injection the injectors could be a little clogged or the valves could be carboned up. with your next tank pour a can of " seafoam " into the tank, itll get rid of any carbon build up

by far the best injection cleaner out there..seafoam works..might take sevral tanks of it but it will clean it..plugs, wires and o2 sensor..and it should rock again...

I gave those caps an honest effort last year and saw no difference in mileage.
