Sales or use tax on a used snowmobile?

Hey all, when considering purchasing used sleds from a private party or a dealer, does going with the private party save you the sales/use tax? I know with cars you have to pay it regardless when you go to register the vehicle but I'm not clear on whether that's the case for snowmobiles.

In MN where I am from, buying from a private party will save you the sales tax. If you buy from a dealer in MN, you will pay the sales tax.

You will pay tax in washington state when you transfer the ownership of the sled based on the price you purchased it for. Washington doesn't title sleds though, so all you have is a registration, but you will pay tax on it regardless of buying it new or used if you transfer the title into your name.

Super helpful snopro911 but one question. You say the state doesn't title sleds but then go to say the I'll pay tax when I transfer the title into my name. Did you mean transfer the registration?

And with that, I've heard that they use Blue Book pricing so there's no real way to game the system. Not that I would ever do that of course, just saying.

in iowa we pay tax on whatever the bill of sale says. so, if you buy from a private party, and they are willing to leave the price blank....you put whatever you want in. I know of a certain someone who paid tax on a $100 2008 Dragon 700 last year...but i cant remember his name ;)

Have the seller fill out and sign this form. You can only be taxed on the amount paid therefore whatever price is "agreed to" is what you will pay on. Won't cut out taxes completely but it would help...hypothetically of course.

Of course I would never recommend such a blatant disregard for the rules...just providing content for the website;)

Edit - if the price is too low, you will be required to submit this form. A simple bill of sale will not be sufficient.
