RX1 Mountain Must do's

Hello all. I just bought 2 2003 RX1 Mountain sleds. 1 is stock and one has some very basic mods. Both have reverse and the stock 151 track. Here is the challange, I am looking for the best mods, or upgrades with a annual limit of $500 per machine. I am going to have these for a long time so I have time to get there. My riding is family based so no need for Nos or turbos. 80% groomed trail with 10% light boondocking and hill climbing, . The other 10% is early riding on snow covered roads. I am thinking to lighten up a bit, improve fuel economy, and improve ride or handling. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

good mtn strap and a left hand throttle, simmons gen 2 skies, something to hold the throttle wide open for minutes at a time....like a rubber band:D

Got the straps, I have one lefty kit, and 1 on the way. 1 machine has Simmons Original flexis, I got a pair of new Nytro skis for the other. Now this rubber band idea has potential....., Thanks

nytro skis are not that good they dart really bad simmon are the way to go

The Nytro ski's are perfect..........For an RX1, a bit too aggressive for a Nytro IMO
Check your drive and jack bearing's and update the collar in the left jack brg if it hasn't been done
Those sled's like big track's, go wide and long if you are riding in soft snow

With the RX-1 does a pair of Simmons Gen 2s make a big difference? I'm currently running powder pros and have been looking into changing over.
thanks

better suggestion

If you want to know everything there is to know about modding an RX-1 go to Totallyamaha.com and look in the RX/RS forum , do a search for "Kachess" RX-1 mods, this guy has built a dozen RX-1 on a minimal budget and they out perform Apex's and loose alot of weight doing it! The best thing about his posts are they go over each mod with details and tell you how to perform these and where to go look for the parts. The best bang for your money is buying "wild child's" rider forward kit which moves the colum and bars 6" forward moving the weight location making the sled react much easier and feel much lighter to ride! THAT is the first thing you should do! Next would be put a riser on the bars to make them fit your height, the higher bars gives you more leverage. There are some simple but effective updates for the RX-1's, carb springs and a few other little things, have these had the updates? You can read about all this stuff on TY...good luck! cheers:D

forgot one thing

I forgot the other huge necessity you would be greatful for doing. Yamaha valves there shocks with ancient pyramid, single stage valving which SUCKS, they work great on little bumps but not big or vice versa....terrible ride on all there sleds. Why they haven't figured this out after all the years is the million dollar question every Yamaha owner wants to know! It cost about 60.00 per shock to send them to Carver Performance and have "Mike" revalve the shocks with multi stage progressive valving for your weight, like Polaris and Doo does with there shocks. This makes for a soft plush ride in the small and stutter bumps, a more progressive ride in the moguls and even stiffer for the big drops or jumps, this will make the RX-1 ton fell much funner to ride. Have them shim the shocks down 3/4" also this makes the front ride flatter and stops some of the body role in corners etc, makes it feel less like a heavy four stroke. So in conclusion, #1. Wildchild rider forward mod, about 200.00
#2. revalve the front shocks and the farthest back rear shock, then pull limiter straps up one or two holes and give your self a lot of transfer by screwing the transfer rods/nuts down. This will make a much much better riding , comfortable sled. You will not know it's the same maching after these two mods, your back and kidneys will thank you!!
After this begin looking into "Kachess" posts on Totallyamaha to see all the other area's you can improve on.

First off raise the bars. I am pretty sure I went 4inch without to much work.

Next and I think most important and somewhat cheap:

Pull the track and either punch it out or replace it with something else preferably a apex mav take off.

Extroverts and an MPI transfer kit. They are like 50$ but you could make your own.

Make sure the rear suspension is mounted in the upper position.

Also a new higher seat, you may find some used apex seats for a song.

Here's my 2003 RX-1M.

Yes, Like I said on TY. A wider front end may be a great mod for you.

I have a 162 Camo Extreme

M-7 rear skid

Wildchild rider forward mod

Nytro Mountain skis (they work awesome) I sold my Simmons

Holz front end

Best of luck
