RX-1 Questions

Hey all I'm considering coming over to the dark side and getting a 4 stroke Yamiha. I've ridden REVs for the past 4 years and really liked the handling of them and the lightweight feel.
They were pretty reliable too, but I think it's time to go 4 stroke now.

What are the pros and cons of the 2004 Rx-1s? Do they feel heavy to ride? Are they difficult to handle on hills, climbing, etc? It will have a long track on it with a good size paddle.

What should I be looking for when looking at the sled? Anything else to be aware of?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

If you go to a bone-stock RX-1 you will KICK YOURSELF and you will want your REV back!!!!

Yes, they are a harder to handle, yes, they are heavy to ride, In climbing your REV will walk all over an RX-1. If riding in tight trees with deep snow.... your best thing to do would to get out of there, lol. Basically, your REV will beat the RX-1 at everything except fuel economy and top speed. Even with boost, it will be harder to ride until the boost kicks in.

On the swamps, fields, some hills, good deep powder the RX-1 is a fun sled to ride! If you do get it, i would highly recommend a bar riser and a 156/159 track and different skis if you plan on riding the steep and deep. Honestly, they arent bad sleds they just need some improving and are not the best sled for a lot of things. Some people though put a pipe or minor performance mods and ride the stink out of them.

I have a friend who rides a stock RX-1 and hes looking for a longer track and bar riser. As he cant get a new sled this coming year.

I would say stick with your 'Doo, and look past the Yamaha unless its got boost.. even then i would say stick with the rev probably. Id look into a Nytro if i was going with a non-boosted 4 stroke.

All depends on your style of riding.

:D

If you are not going to mod the sled stick with your rev. A few non turbo mods will make it handle better and feel lighter but will not feel as light as a REV.

Boost is completely different.

You will hate the rx-1 if you are going to ride a stock 4-stroke i would get an apex or nytro

The Rx1 is a great platform for a mod sled and you can buy them cheap but stock it is a POS as a mountain sled. Stock for stock the Rev will kill it all day long, any time any place.

Some good feedback on this above ... I've not riden another brand but buying a stock '04 - would require a LOT of upgrades to have it really perform. For a lot of guys, that's a lot of work/time/money to put into a sled.

If your looking to invest in 4-stroke technology, go for an Apex or newer, the cash offset is worth it. PS I'm still riding my '03 and the $ spent to have it Bad Azz, well ~ I could have bought another sled.

Another thing...

dont know if this has happened to anyone else but, if you wipe out and the rx-1 ends up on its side with nobody on it and it stays on its side and is not running for a even less than a couple mins, it will be a pain in the butt to get it started again. Plus, it takes pretty much all your might to get it over onto the track in powder or just bring alll your buddies riding with you :D

I have an 03 RX1 and I love it, I have installed a 03 skidoo suspension, I went with a skidoo take off track the real lightweight one 151x16x2.25 and it was a great track for a couple rides then lugs started chunking of I just bought a 162x16x2.313 in a 2.52 pitch track from Tracks USA, I geared it down to 19/43,and put a heelclicker clutch kit in the primary. I shaved 70 lbs so far with the suspension as well as, new drop brackets, an under tunnel straight pipe that I custom made, removed headlight pod and light and added some small fog lights, and put a lightweight Holz front suspension in. I went from a 38 to a 41 ski stance after I bent my stock a arms and no one had any 38s in stock, it felt real tippy with the 38 but now after riding the 41 it is ok but if I did it all over I would stick with the 38. But after all the set up and tuning this thing runs like a beast, a lot of people are real surprized at how well it climbs. Anyway I love it but to each their own. Peace Out!!!

I had a RX1 for 2 seasons without turbo but all the light weight stuff done

It totaly rocked --- was right there with the 800-900 gang and had 0 maintenance issues --- that said I would not ride one stock.
