RX-1: pulled the trigger

Well guys, I am the proud new owner of an RX-1... so I guess I'm in the club now :) Do I need to bring cookies?

Hopefully this isn't like owning a boat... the two best days are when you buy it and when you sell it.

Looking forward to getting out and letting her run. In the meantime I'm looking for a reverse kit. How often do they come up for sale used and what models will fit a 2003 RX-1? Will a reverse kit off of an Apex fit (etc)?

BTW, thanks for helping with all the newbie questions thus far.

Yaa, gotcha. I'm planning on a bunch of those mods. Will try to do the following this winter:

1. reverse
2. wide skis
3. rider forward

Will try to get to some of the other items this summer when I have more time.

Good stuff.

Ebay will get you a reverse kit. Apex is a correct kit. I did this to mine and it worked great. I recommend the Apex/ Nytro mountain skis. I put them on both my RX1's and they work great at a much lower cost. Enjoy

Normally aspirated for now. But we'll see if I yield to the addiction after some runs up Roman Nose :)

Yaa, sounds like the Gen 2s are the ticket for flotation.

oh yeah,it's doughnuts and first thing is get ride of the factory skis for your safety, and just ride,go real fast and take more chances, welcome to 4 stroke, mmm...4stroke

I am like you and just got my RX-1,

I got a chance to pull the trigger some today, man I tell you what, the MC express turbo on mine at 10 lbs boost is insane. I went up some hills today that you would sink to your waist in snow and gained speed all the way up. The Gen 2 simmons are awesome in soft snow, but make sure you keep the front narrow because mine will be going under the knife to make it 2" narrower on each side. Another thing, with this sled is that under low boost (partial throttle opening) if it starts to trench, give the throttle a squeeze and feel yourself jump on top of the snow with 80 mph track speed, and rocket up the hill.

All I can tell you is the King Cat big bore I had could not hold the Jock Strap of this RX-1.

Just an update to this thread...,

Got to finally take here out into some good snow and let me tell you, I made the right choice :)

I was with a buddy on a Mountain Cat 800 who was getting bounced around quite a bit going in (we were on a road that nobody has been in on in the winter for years and there were lots of whoops, creeks, etc). My big ole sled just pushed through as nice as can be and was crazy snappy and fast. And the fact that I probably burned less than $5 in gas the whole day was even better (if you're doing the math... a lot of our trip was stop and go clearing the road).

I did get schooled on sidehilling though. When we got up high the road was mostly filled in so we really had to sidehill to prevent going down the steep slope. It's pretty unnerving having the backend sliding/pointing down the hill as you're hanging on uphill and giving it the throttle to keep moving. And even more-so when it's your first time! I'll get use to it. I'm 6'7" so having to bend over those short stock bars was a pain. I've ordered a 3" over stock wildchild rider forward kit so that should make things much nicer.

I need to do something about the stock foot rails too. With my size 15 feet I don't have a lot of room to get into a stable position. They need to be wider and go further back. I'll probably buy or build something this summer.

Thanks again for all the advice here. Definitely a fun sport and having the right equipment makes all the difference.

i keep pulling the trigger on my rx1... lots of real good mods for cheap and cut weight. but to get you going this season i'd address the ergonomics, floation, clutching/gearing. that said

erg
-rider forward (wildchild is great to work with and stands behind his product) you should be comfortable standing cause that's where you'll be 80% of the time
-apex handle bars (i can help you with the hand warmer wiring)
-apex seat or overstuff your rx1 seat for now

float
-genII or slp or stock apex/nytro, save some cash

clutching/gearing
-top 18 or 19 th
-bottom 42 (40 w/ reverse)
-pull all the rivets out of the stock wieghts (that should get you close to 10,200 rpms with the 151 track) you'll need to get new weights or grind off a few grams once you put on a larger track
-primary (silver arctic cat) spring
-secondary (white yamaha) and set the angle to your liking
-shockwave adjustable, it's a great piece and allows you to dial in your rpms in seconds, the rx1 tends to range based on elevation and the shockwave allows you compensate

misc
-pull the sway bar
-the boards or the rx1 suck!!!! i'm pulling mine in the garage mid season they're bend and make great ice cubes, so i'm opening them up and putting on sno elimators, extrude rail edges etc

all this sounds like alot but it's really only a couple of evenings worth of work for someone who's never done it before and it'll really help you out. as for suspensions the local shop has a few M7 141 and 153 for sale less than $300 if i remember, come on down to montana and we'll head to cooke city.

goodluck
