rusty trailer rims

K

knee deep in it

Well-known member
why do those white trailer rims rust so badly? I bought a trailer and the rims are hideous looking. I am afraid to just replace them with the same crappy white ones if they are going to be rusted out in a couple of years.

Is it better to sand blast them and then put some white rustoleum? Is aluminum a better option?

Aluminum a better option if you want to pay the money.

Sand blast them ... paint tham let dry ... then put on a coat of polystyrene ... you know the stuff for fiberglass. Rock hard and will keep a barrier between wheel and oxidizers.

Knee: Take tires off rims if tires are junk throw away. Then take rims out to Consolidated Compressor out at 9516 40 st S.E. and sand blast them yourself. They have a pay as you use program. Then go to CDN Tire and find a mis match grip snow tire see if you can buy cheap, then call around to other Cdn tire stores and find a mate to it.

I did this and paid $20. per tire for $80. good quality tires. Sand blasting cost me $30. and paint was $8. then I put clear coat on works well.:beer;

Have rims sandblasted & refinished by a powder coat facility.

If you blast them, a case of beer to the right person will get them painted.;)

I actually have access to our sandblasting facility in Edmonton but, for 30$, I am just going to do it at COnsolidated Compressor.

Thanks Guys.

Any suggestions on paint? I was thinking white Rustoleum and then a polyurethane finish over it.

Just did that to my buddies trailer. You need to put some seamsealer where the two parts of the rims meet otherwise you will have rust in half a year. Then paint over the top you will be fine. You can get an automotive base seamsealer at your local parts store.
