Rusty HaulMark

I just crawled under my 29 ft HaulMark V nose trailer and everything is rusted under there. What the hell, this trailer was made in UT and they didn't put any kind of undercoat on it. It is only has two seasons of sledding on it and I always wash it when I get home.

I spent half the day under it with a grinder and a wire wheel trying to clean up the mess so I can paint it with some rust stopping paint and I have at least another days worth of work.

Anyone else have this problem with Haulmark trailers?

Right now I am giving them a big thumbs down, won't buy one again.:mad2:

Do any of them undercoat the steel frames?

unfortunately, that is the nature of the beast with steel framed trailers. washing or not. they are made with mild steel, even if coated, the material will chip and rust.

ski

Looks like under every steel framed trailer I have ever seen, regardless of make or purpose or size of trailer. (including semi)

guess you just need to be aware of this and undercoat them as soon as you get them. I have seen some that come coated with something like rhino lining or line x.

maybe you do, but I dont know anybody that crawls under their trailer and washes it, the best I do is try to spray it off but that still doesnt remove everything, I agree it looks like every steel trailer I have ever seen
some do undercoat but you will most likely do alot better job then the quicky the manufacter does

That is why I ordered an all aluminum trailer. I have seen too many rusty trailers. The aluminum is more but will hold it's appearance for a lot longer.

my wells cargo, also made in ut, has some thick black undercoat on it, still in good shape for 6 years use. there are some areas of rust where the under coat was thin or forgot.

X2, mine is 11 years old now and still looks awesome.

Aluminum exposed to the road salt looks like crap, that's why I didn't get it, but I supposed oxidized aluminum is better than rusty mild steal now that I see this.

Stay right -side-up and you'll have nothing to worry about. Surface rust like that is ugly, but harmless. When it starts flaking or showing pinholes is a concern.

That is why I am doing something about it now, So I can avoid it getting to that stage.

Me personally would stick with painted steel or aluminum, I had one enclosed that was under coated and it actually rusted from the inside out as moisture got behind the undercoat in several areas.

A whole lot of grinding then rust converter, and painting with Oil based enamel implement paint.

I'm about 2/3 done.

z-man, that would drive me nuts too. I usually take my steel trailers straight over to line x and coat the tongue and underside as well. I'm on my 2nd aluminum trailer to avoid that. I built my last one with stainless everything(hinges, levers) as well. Mother nature rules.

When you get the rust buffed off give it a coat of POR-15. The axles on our All-Aluminum trailer are coated with this and they still look great. Good Luck with your project >>>>.
