running rich on oil

running like 60:1 need to turn the oil down is there any other way to do it without taking the slp air box off and the throttle bodies. I have fatboz cable.

60:1????? YIKES at that rate that sucker is gonna sieze.....

30-35:1 is ideal

Are you SURE on your numbers there River?

Going the wrong way with those numbers. But yeah, to properly adjust your oil rate, is to remove your exhaust and intake. Pain in the poop hole. Had to do mine a few times before I got the right mixture.

yes going the wrong way. I'm burning about 1 1/2 quarts to a tank of gas I thought 50:1 is what you want. not sure what I'm at dont know how to do it.but that suck you got to pull all that out to adjust it.

If your tps is out of wack, that can kill oil consumption as well. You should be burning in the neighborhood of 1000ml-1200ml of oil per tank of fuel. That will put you in the range of 35:1 to 40:1. It's not a difficult task to adjust that oiler cable. Plus it will give you the opportunity to check and see if those oil marker lines are close to being lined up. If they are on the money, I would check your tps.

Ya, it's not the most fun thing to do... even once you get that stuff outta the way, it's still tight quarters in there.

Just for reference, the proper way to figure oil use.

1. Take the total number of gallons that it takes to fill your tank
2. Multiply the number by 128 (your getting the number into ounces)

3. Now fill your oil tank to the top, noting exactly how many ounces it took (using a measuring cup to fill)

4. Divide the number of ounces of gas by the number of ounces of oil you have used.

Example.

6.80 gallons of gas used with 1 quart of oil

6.80 x 128 = 870.4 ounces of gas
1 x 32 = 32 ounces of oil

870.4 / 32 = 27.2

So at that mixture you will be running 27:1.... pretty dang rich

This is something you will want to check over several good rides to be sure you get an accurate number, the longer the rides, the more accurate it gets. Personally, I think 35:1 is about the perfect spot to be at, the best compromise between power and protection.

Thanks all ,I have it adjusted a little on the rich side of the two marks.I will take a measurement next time I ride but it looks like I'm close to what it should be. like 40:1 I didnt know the TPS would make you burn more.

Great post Seth, oil mix is so much easier to calculate in the metric system lol.
If you didn't know River.... the oiler cable can be adjusted fairly easily through the hole in the frame just infront of the primary clutch, a short 10mm wrench does the trick nicely. But as stated, you will need the Y-pipe and plenum off to get a clear view of the arm with the marks on it. Although if you calculate your current ratio, seeing the mark is kind of a moot point because you will know which way it needs to be adjusted.

oil

as for the line op marks looking at the motor what side of the line is giving you less oil? as i want to use less oil as well i have it set on the mark but think you could dial it for less but what way to go?

you really should do the calculations to determine your ratio, adjust and re-test. But anyways, looking at the front of the engine:
If the pointer on the arm is to the left of the mark on the pump it is richer. If the pointer is to the right it is leaner. You can easily figure this out just by looking at how the arm moves when you apply throttle.

If looking at the front of sled if the pointer on the oil pump is to the right its richer. as this is the way it is being pulled so it will give it more.

If I remember correctly, this is correct. You can have it slightly on the left of the mark, if you want to be picky. This will burn less oil.All depends how much slack is in your throttle cable. You want it to be lined up when the throttle plates open.
