running lean?

Picked up a 2010 m8, with OVS race gas turbo this summer. Was in the process of changing reeds out when I noticed a lot of white in the Y-pipe. Pulled the head and found a lot of sand looking material on top of the piston. Assuming it is pulled aluminum from the top of the piston. Head cleaned off easy with rag with no scaring and jugs look good. So question for all you motor heads, was he running it too lean or is there something else going on. He was running 12psi with a full tank of 112, he said. Fuel in the bottom of tank is purple. Thanks

I run Sunoco and my whole pipe is chalk white inside. It kind of freaked me out the first time i saw it , i think its normal . Since you have it apart go get some oem slugs , then you will not have to worry.

12 lbs on an 8 is alot of fun , you will be happy you did not get a pump gas kit.:face-icon-small-hap

Thanks guys, It was kind of weird, almost like a gummy deposit on the plugs and exhaust ports and power valves. Compression was 120 on both sides. Guess once I get it back together i will see what the program is and see what changes need to be made for fuel. yeah, going to order a new set of pistons in the am.

waiting for some new pistons to show up so I changed out the reeds. 650 miles, 12 psi running 112 fuel. Reeds looked good except on the mag side bottom set. Just a heads up for anyone that might be thinking about replacing theirs.

is anything pitted or did it all clean off, does the sled have a intercooler, if the charge tube temps climb to high it doesn't matter how high the octane or map it can still deto.

No intercooler. Head and jugs cleaned up great, you can still see the crosshatch in the walls. Pistons had some damage to the top near the exhaust ports, pretty rough feeling like sand blasted aluminum. It is a 2010, so it should pick up on deto and the guy I picked it up from said no issues when he ran it and he seemed like a pretty honest guy.

Do you know for sure if the fuel had lead in it or not. The piston def. has some deto. 12 lbs is about the max without a intercooler on more than a 12-15sec pull, depending on elevation. BD makes a mini water to air cooler that is supposed to be the cats a$$.

Call Travis or Garr at OVS. It's their kit and they know their stuff. I have a pump gas kit on an 09 M1000 and really like it. Biggest mistake was not ordering a race gas kit. It's addicting to say the least. Call them and get some good info on your kit. You won't regret it.

Thanks, Ive called both of them a couple times and they seem like great guys. Always helped with my questions. Might end up going to Ogden to get some fuel before the season and I would love to stop in and meet them and get good run down on everything.

just a bit hot.

You need just a bit more fuel in you box. Looks like you got just a bit lean and got the blow torch affect. Replace pistons make sure cylinders are good and add some fuel to you B/G and watch you O2 close I would guess that you saw close to 14 on it when that happened.

Thanks, I just bought the sled last month and was in the process of changing out the reeds for next season when I decided to check the Pistons. Every thing else looks great, head and cylinders. It still had 120psi cold on each side when I tested it the week before.
