RSI Grips/Heaters Melting?

Put a set of RSI burandt bars on my 14 pro along with the RSI grips and heaters. Second ride with them today. Worked fine all day and towards the end of the ride I noticed them getting warmer, then they got REALLY warm. I killed the sled to prevent any further damage. Ended up melting the grips and the warmers. Any Idea what would cause this? Both grips melted. Running a headlight delete not sure if that has anything to do with it?

Possible your voltage regulator is fried. That used to be a common thing to have happen when the regulator went bad. I don't know if it is related to the headlight delete, but it could be.

I bought a new VR because I thought mine was bad, it was a guess and it wasn't the problem. If you need one let me know I have an extra, Paid the $175 for it, but not doing me much good.

If you VR is shot... you can have a problem.

There are so many things with the headlight delte install that can go wrong that can cause issues.

Please post up some photos of your delete work/resistors/wiring etc along with a detailed photo of the resistor showing the markings on your resistor.

What is your VR Setup now... Where is it located... part number on the VR... and MOST important... Photos!!

Cant remember the part number but this is the setup I was using, maybe its all wrong..

I moved the VR just for the picture

I cant figure it out I tried plugging it in to the stock voltage regulator then I tried the other one then I tried nut plugging it in at all with the same result, the grips get really hot but don't seem to melt, not sure why they would before. I had the second VR mounted on top of the stock one (incorrect I know) so I moved it and bolted it to the clutch cover. I'm still stumped

Just that grip or both sides? Jar something in that grip? Maybe replace that side and see if it goes away?

Never mind, saw you mentioned both now.....

With your "headlight delete" what resistor did you run to replace the load of the headlights??

Please post a photo of that setup?

Did you bolt the external voltage regulator to the clutch cover...You must do that as the regulator must have a heatsink mounted to it... (the clutch cover).

Theres your problem... Not enough load on the system.

You have to put a good quality 2 ohm resistor to replace the headlights....

Connect one end to ground... the other end to the high AND LOW beam circuits.

This one is high quality and good price.

Re-read the thread you linked to above... get the connectors for the headlight etc.
There was a lot more in that thread than just adding the external VR.

Unfortunately... your grip heaters are bad as are your grips... maybe both of your VR's are shot as well... since it was fine and then it wasnt.... seems like you "popped" your VR as it tried to shed all the extra juice... but with no heat sink and no real load to speak of.

The resistor must also be mounted to some body sheet metal... the tunnel works well for that.

Ok thank you I appreciate your help, i'll do some messing around and see what I can come up with, mountain fit makes a resistor that I can plug into the headlight plug or I might try to put the bulbs in and put them under the hood somewhere

Updates???

DO NOT run the headlights and tie them up under the hood... you will have shattered glass everywhere under the hood and be back to square one in a hurry!

The resistor mounted to your bulkhead will be best... and just do the plug/play with the headlight connector... you will be golden!

Thanks for the Help I greatly appreciate it! Got fed up and put the headlights back in and ordered new VR's just to be safe, Can I still run 2 VRs with the headlights in? Everything as far as electrical had been returned to stock

Yep... You can run the main 2013 thru 2015 VRR and a supplemental attached to the clutch cover if you like.

I installed a set of RSI heaters and grips on my new 15, sled is bone stock except the bars being changed out....first ride on the sled and the grips have melted a little, I did cork underneath the heaters. They are still working fine...

The RSI heaters are meant, mostly, for aluminum bars that suck the heat out.

On high.. with the cork... I CAN see the heat getting to be an issue.
