rough running in revers

why would a 2006 polaris 900 run really rough only in reverse though. The more gas you give it in reverse the worse it runs. Thanks for any info

Does it by chance only do it in deep snow?

If this is the case it is due to snow blocking the exhaust exit... the deflector acts as a scoop when backing up.

Otherwise I'm not so sure...

does it in deep snow or no snow it acts like it wants to die. Its my father inlaws sled so im not a 100% on the details but it sounds like it just bogs out and cuts out the more you hit the throttle. But it is only in reverse.

sevenhundo, do you have a "ER" helix in the secondary?

Just wondering why the tps or fouled plugs would only be problematic in reverse runs great forward. Thanks and i dont know what helix he has it just started this spring though.

When you select reverse and the motor starts running in reverse, will it run rough before the clutch engages?

IE...does it immediately begin running rough at idle (in reverse) or only when the clutch has engaged and the sled begins to move?

It may or not be a TPS wiring and or TPS sensor being defective but it is one of the most common reasons for poor engine runnability and reverse symptoms. Often times this area (TPS and TPS wiring connector) can cause reverse symptoms because correct TPS voltage is one of the main parameters for the ECM to allow reverse to engage.

If TPS return voltage is not correct, the ECM can interpret the operator is trying to open the throttle during the reverse command which then becomes a saftey and powertrain issue.

Since it's easy to check, I would check this first.

I have other ideas but every 900 owner should have a TPS wiring pigtail and a new TPS in their tool box.

I just called him to get more info and he said it runs fine idling but the way i understood was when the clutch is engaged it runs poorly. So does that take out the tps possibilities. Thanks

I would think if it idles in reverse and up until they are engaged it's something with the Helix? Don't positive tho. They are easy enough to check.

I have this exact issue after installing the Team Lightened secondary clutch. I just figure it is the helix. At times the belt will jam in the primary if I try to push the throttle to much.

After rebuilding about 10 of these TSS-98's and 04's, I'm finding the sliding sheeve bushing is wearing out. When the wear gets excessive, the sheeve then gets cocked and causes hell to the helix engaging. Team Industries sells the bushings so repairing this and replacing the worn parts before it damages or cracks the sheeve isn't to terrible.
