Rotc

I'll be starting an elective ROTC course in Rapid in a week or so. I didn't take the scholarship because I don't want to commit until I have to after two years, if I even will at all. I'm just wondering what I can expect and what options I will have after graduation. I will be speaking to the recruiter next week, but I was just wondering if you guys have any insight that may prove helpful.

After graduation (or before) you will be told what officer slots are available. Then you will have to go to school for that particular job. At least that is what I understand. You can probably go into any field you want, but you have to wait for slots to open if they are full. I don't know a whole lot about ROTC, I am direct commisioning right now. Then I will have to go to a 3 month long officer basic course and do my job training. I have had it with the enlisted side. ;)

I'm not sure about Army, but at least in the AF, the officer side looks like it sucks pretty bad. Lots of paperwork and politics, where on the enlisted side I actually feel like I'm doing something worthwhile. I'm considering finishing my degree and going to OTS because if I do my 20 years the retirement $ would probably be double what I would get retiring at 20 years as an E-8 (Senior Master Sgt for us).

My only advice to anyone that gets commissioned is to trust in your NCOs to get the job done. Micro management pisses us off more than anything:beer;

Good luck!!

Cheers to that bro! :beer; I will be a good officer that has trust in my enlisted soldiers....empowers them...makes them feel important. I also hate micro-management! It is demoralizing! I am tired of tyrant type CO's that make their enlisted officers feel like chit! Our NCO's are the backbone of the military!

luvtoride,

what branch ROTC? Makes a pretty big difference.

What do you want to do, if you were to take a commission after you graduate? Specific MOS you're looking at?

There are some great programs out there that I wish I'd known about during my college years (the Navy specifically has one that is unbelievable...full E-3 (up to E-5) pay, no committment while in school, full active duty benefits...you'd have to be retarded not to attempt to get into that program). I went to 2 days of Air Force ROTC when I started college and said "screw this." Looking back, probably a mistake...BUT, now I'm a 2nd Lt in the Marine Corps, so it all worked out in the end anyway.

So, what program? What branch? What MOS/job?

Well, I like the course, JUST about passed my first PT test. I'm considering going SMP with the guard, paid as an E5, and I can't be deployed as long as I stay with the ROTC for my tenure in school.

I believe there was even an option to skip guard BT, but I think I'd do it nonetheless. After MS3, I'd go to ELDAC, and with both the BT and ELDAC, I'd be in pretty good shape as far as training-during-school goes. I'm not really sure what my MOS will be yet, I have time to figure it out, I have time to figure this all out.
