rmsha Q's?

That's funny there! This racing stuff isn't as easy as it looks!!! You two are doing good and getting better FAST!

We stopped for dinner in Twin Falls and got home at 9:00. Glad we left when we did! 4 in the AM just sounds painful!!

See you in a couple of days, drive careful!

LOL, life's tough in the streets of Poky. I think it took a grand total of 38 minutes to get to my house from Pebble. Glad at least one race is close enough to sleep in my own bed afterwards. Happy everyone made it home ok. Beaver Hillclimb is going to rock!! Got to end the year on a good note. Just remember not to stare at those dang ski tips ;)

p.s. I even had my two sentences of fame in the monday newspaper about hillclimbing. Most recognition about racing I have had all year lol......

That would be nice being close to home!! Figures the race close to me gets cancelled!

Beaver should kick a$$! Can't wait!

I can't wait for Beaver!

I had a great time at Pebble but didnt do as good as I would've liked to.

RMSHA is a great experience! You meet some of the nicest, most humble people in the sport, like rmk_racer :D
Competeing with some really fast riders is also a blast!

Good Luck to all racers and future racers!

Jay

Haha nice one.. Well, I really thought I was ready to kick some @$$ as the hometown racer, but I was kept in check all weekend. Blew gate 9 into the trees in improved and almost took out a couple people. Then was plumb out of control in mod and almost went over backwards climbing the cattrack after gate 14. Got that whole episode on camera so i will try to post it. Now just getting ready for Beaver Mt. Double points, I need to learn how to race these freakin ski hills in less than a week :D See you in a few more days

I would love to see that video. I bet its pretty entertaining. Those ski hills are definantly a challenge. I like them a little more because hopefully if I crash the landing will be softer :o Hey congrats on making the paper! Thats pretty cool! By the way, do you like living in Pocatello? If we have time in at the Beaver race maybe Derek and I can talk to you about it? Have a safe trip and we will see you soon.

ved, the wife and i raced the circuit for the first time this year. a very good time. hooked for sure now. i suggest keeping it as simple as possible for the first year. start a budget(spread sheet). line item each race. mileage(round trip including motel to race site each day(be generous)), estimate fuel usage, lodging, food, annual RMSHA membership fee(you'll be assigned a # after paid), and race enty fees. that will give you an idea of the cost of each race. use the sled you have now. get the minimum gear needed, i.e., tek vest, shin/knee guard, tether switch on sled, extended snow flap(i bought a mud flap from NAPA and trimmed it, needs to touch ground when seated on sled & 1 inch wider than tunnel on each side), 4" RMSHA # on both side of sled(local graphics store can hook u up((maybe even sponsor the work and material to put their logo on your sled)), race jersey w/ RMSHA #, "RMSHA", SLP logo, and name if wanted(i recommend it), track screws(stub boy has some cheap one's that work until you can get ur hands on some Kold Kutters(find em at the race scene, might have to trim your paddle/lug down so when screws are applied they don't rip the heck out of the inside of your tunnel, tunnel protectors are also made), 5 gallon fuel can(make sure fuel does not have ethanol in it), nice little tool box(basic hand tools, rivit gun/rivits, duct tape, zip ties, super glue, etc. Be prepared to make some cosmetic repairs!! This is just the basics for sure. If you can afford more then go for it.

I hope that helps a little. The other folks on here will pick up whatever i missed. Make it fun and it will snowball from there with your wife. Make the first year a learning lesson rather than a great plan of winning the King of King title. Look at other racers sleds, ask questions and you'll generally find a helpful answer. I would say it is very family oriented, lots of wives race and lots just show up and support. Kids playing everywhere and really just a good old time. After the races families go swimming, nice dinners, and all sorts of other family stuff to do. That will be the seller for you is finding out your share of family stuff to do along with the racing! Good luck ved

Good stuff! You guys seems like a good group.

I look forward to being a spectator in Beaver this weekend.

TEAR IT UP!

Awesome information king, thanks a lot. i use to race sleddogs so i understand what its like to have an expensive sport....but i think this could be much more expensive. the nice thing is i dont have to feed the sled all summer long unlike the dogs. my wife loved going to sleddog races but with the training and racing, its more of an alone sport. she didnt go out on training runs with me nor could she see me the whole time i was racing. so this does seem to be much more family friendly as far as interacting.

over the weekend we bought last years jackson hill climb video, we've watched it several times already, we love it. her biggest fear is of course the cost, especially if i lose a sled down the hill. so i'll keep working on her and see where it takes me. i'm definately not going to give up on it yet.

so would you suggest keeping my existing sled stock or doing some improvements to it and running in the semi pro improved class? ive already done a few small things to it and planned to do some more significant upgrades to it this summer.

thanks again to everyone, this has been a great intro to the sport and shows just how much you guys take care of each other.

If I could start over again with one sled I would definitely keep it stock. This gives you the option to run all three classes instead of just two. You might not have the most powerful or best handling setup like you can get in improved and mod, BUT I think it is more valuable as a beginner to get all the runs in you can. If you end up getting another sled, improve it and keep progressing as a racer. If anything you have a backup sled for at least two classes in case something happens to one sled. They also have a declaration you can fill out to share sled with another racer. I have to friends racing that are brothers. One sled wouldn't run this weekend so with that shared sled document he got to race on his bros sled and still get his runs in. Lots of teams share one sled between two to three different racers. Makes a big difference when paying for one sled is already tight on the budget.

the only improvements ive done to my sled are an aftermarket can and switched to a 2 wheel setup in the rear. so i would have to lose those two things then i should be fine to race it, correct?

i work every other weekend so attending all the races might be out of the question, is that ok?

also, any recommendations on where to get a race jersey with the sponsor logos? just in case.

we're talking now and shes warming up a lot, thanks for all the wonderful posts.

As long as you just change everything back to how it came stock, you should be good to go.

For your first year, it isn't a huge deal to attend every race. You receive a few points for attending each race, as well as points for how you qualify and then how you place in the finals. Unless you are ready to jump in head first, you shouldn't really worry about points until you are able to race competitively. I think just attending what races you can will help you get an idea about if you really want to keep racing. Maybe try to go to a handful of the easier races your first year. There are obviously some races on the circuit that are more newbie friendly. This year, Afton was the hardest in my opinion and Pebble was probably the next hardest so those could be races you could skip if you wanted to. My advice is to watch the RMSHA website for the schedule ( I think they posted it in November last year?) and then either make a post on here about what races you should try to attend or call the secretary and ask their opinion of which races are best for someone just starting out.

We used Klim jersies, but you could probably use just about any brand of jersey you wanted to. We had our numbers, names and sponsors screen printed on them, which is also a great way to get a little sponsorship like king said in a previous post. You never know what they might be able to do for you! You have to have the racer sponsor on your jersey, in the past this has been SLP and I have a feeling that they will continue next year. There is a link on the RMSHA website that has the downloadable racer sponsor logo for you to use.

As far as losing a sled down the hill, that is always a risk you take, but for the most part on every race except Jackson you aren't going to sustain more than some cosmetic damage, maybe an A-arm, possibly a shock, but probably no serious mechanical damage. Every race has hill help and they all do a phenominal job at trying to save your sled.

I wish there was a way for your wife to understand how much of a family sport this really is!! If you decide to race next year, let me know and I'd be happy to introduce myself to her so she has a familiar face in the crowd!:)

Prob didn't even leave a sig either. Cowardly scum anyway. I passed some green a few days ago, didn't even make a mark from me. I'll try again soon.

I saw her red a few days ago and tried to make it go away but I didn't even make a dent in it. Someone must have hit her pretty hard. Glad Mule could take care of business!
