RMK / Assault - need input & advice

I put 2500 miles on an '09 Assault, and have 420 miles on a 2011 PRO RMK.

The '09 Assault was 90% better than any other sled I have run in 10% of the conditions I rode in. The track is really snow specific, ran great in early snow conditions when you could trench down to dirt, and get some hook-up. And it excelled in set-up spring snow and could go-anywhere in hero snow. And the shocks I put on (IQR Needles) and the wide front end made this one hell of a high speed cross-country sled. But all the months and rides in between that I found it lacking. Again this was the IQ Assault, the PRO is most definitely a different beast.

The PRO RMK is 100% better than any sled I have rode in 90% of the conditions I ride in. This chassis is phenomenal. I don't regret giving up the shock package to go with the RMK, and it's narrower front end is only noticeable in the fact that it carve exponentially better than the IQ Assault did. And I don't miss the Assault Competition Track, I don't believe stretching it from 146 to 155 could have helped that much.

My .02

x2. I lovem y assualt and i ride cooke city (some of the deepest snow around) all the time. NO issues what so ever. If you can ride, you can take the assault anywhere.

I have an 11 switchback assault with the 144 2" track .. Its 20 pounds heavyer than the pro rmk but you would never tell I to am from saskatchewan and it works great here in the flat and I also just got back from valemount bc. Where there was 4 feet of fresh pow and it climbed and boondocked like nothing I've ever riddin before regardless of what you get you'll have a sick sled and your gonna love it and as for assaults being slow I had mine doing 93mph with more to go... The rmk assault might be slower but who cares cause if your into boondocking and playing around all I can say is hold on tight because it feels like its going to rip your arms out of the sockets

I have a 155 assault. I have been mountian riding for years. I ride alot in Island Park Idaho on trails on my way to playing in the POW, The assault is the way to go... I have a pro ride assault with a 155 5.1 on it and it rocks. the clicker shocks are incredible, and the 5.1 is great on and off trail. The original Assault track absolutly launches and the brake is incredible, however by 3 in the afternoon, it will wear your *** out riding it. After riding the sled 5 hours it trys to tear itself out of your hands everytime you grab the throttle. I would also reccomend a super Q can...

Seems like the Assault is the way to go and um..............have two tracks on hand, ha ha.

Great info guys, thanks again!!!

I'm am officially sled-less as I recently sold mine and now cannot wait until 2012 snowcheck to see what's new!!!!!!

Heading back to West Yellowstone in a few weeks, gonna be renting a new Pro RMK. Needless to stay I cannot wait!!

If you're looking for a track we've tried them all on these sleds. CE, PC, 5.1, etc... They all work really well but I do believe Carls Cycles in Boise, ID still has some 5.1 take offs from 2011 Pros. They put alot of 153" PC on these Pro's and have some laying around. Friend just picked one up after I called and checked on it for him...$300+ shipping!

Definitely a good price on the take off tracks.

I am in the same boat as you being a prairie boy I bought the Assault ProRMK because of the snow conditions around here. I was able to go to Valemount 2 weeks ago and there was a ton of fresh pow out there and yes the competition track loves to trench! (therefore my new nickname "trench") But as conditons changed and things started to set up the assault track really started to shine and I was able to go alot of places that I couldn't have gone the previous days. It worked great and the shocks more then make up for the track deficiency. The trail to chappel creek is 15 miles of stutter bumps (try that on a set of floats) and the WE's made the trip in and out enjoyable. Is the proRMK a better choice in the mountains, maybe. For the prairies the proRMK Assault definitely is the better choice, just my $0.02 take it for what it is! I love this sled, so much nicer to throw around, but be prepared for a forearm workout from hanging on!

So by the end of the season, everyone should be able to tell who rides an assault just by the size of their forearms.........................Because they'll look like Popeye!!!

I'm in the same boat. From West Central MN who get's out west 2-3 times a year. Most riding in MN is ditches. Had 03 800 RMK, 144 2" that worked well out west and back home. I am leaning towards the Assault- figure worse case scenario I can always get the 5.1. I think the 012 lineup and snow check options will help make the decision. I do appreciate all the posts on this subject.

That is the what I'm thinking too. Can't wait to see what snowcheck has to offer in a few weeks.

Well, with Snow-Check right around the corner, I thought I would bring this topic up one more time for any additional thoughts or comments to help out in some decision making.

FDX... Have you come to a decision on what sled you're going with? I'm going with the Pro-RMK, now deciding on 600 or 800. Either way it's going to be an unbelievable ride from my old 03 800 RMK. My only fear with the 600 is I wonder if I'd be leaving something on the table?

Pretty much decided on going with an Assault with a powder track, narrow the front as much as it will go and add a few more goodies.

From everyone I have spoken too and with all of great input as listed above, I think the best "all around" sled me is going to be the RMK Assault. With the option of the powder track during snow check and the input on ski widths with the Pro's really helped a lot in the decision.

My other RMK's in the past, I usually ran them in the middle setting (40") for ski stance, so I'll just set the Assault to it's narrowest (41 1/2"). Basically talking 1 1/2 difference, so 3/4 of inch on each side of the sled. Plus I rented an RMK in Yellowstone about a month ago, with the ski stance set wide (41"), I never really had any problems carving, it handled awesome.

Most everyone said that with the Pro, your not going to really notice the ski stance difference especially now going with the new chassis.

As far as powder, steep and deep, we'll make it out west two or three times a year with the remainder of the miles being put on here, in ND. Taking this into consideration, I should have a sled that will perform awesome here and very very good out west. This was a big factor, really looking at where the "majority" of the miles will be put on. Yes, everyone wants the baddest mountain sled but I think with this set up a guy should have one bad azz sled all around.

Again, a big thank you to everyone with their input as I know I probably wasn't the only one pondering this decision.

Now the bad part................................waiting until spring!!!!!!!!!!!!!:face-icon-small-sad
