Rktech user results

just installed my rk tek pistons with the pa head.

from the get go, i cld noticeable tell that the sled didnt vibrate near as bad at idle. it sounds good, and pulls real strong. no bog anywhere thru out the squeeze of the flapper.

only got 7 miles on it right now, as we dnt have much snow around here, but so far impressed with how it runs.

will give a better ride report when i get the motor broke in.

now have 10+ kits on the snow most being set up with slp pipe kits as well. I as well as all of my customers are very impressed with the results of the drop in kit this year! Flat out works! Had a customer who currenty has a stock 2013 pro ask to ride my sled yesterday to see the difference and when he got back he said " why didnt you tell me no, that just cost me some money! The slp pipe set up makes a difference for sure but the combo with the drop in kit takes the fun factor to a whole new level." here's a little video from yesterday to show the difference between the drop in kit with the slp pipe set up and just the pipe set up. Have a few videos comparing my sled to a stock 13, a 12 with drop in kit, and the piped 13 as well, will post them up when i get time

2013 Pro Stock (black sled) vs. 2013 Pro with SLP Pipe set(blue sled) vs. 2013 Pro With SLP Pipe set and RK Tek Drop in kit (gold sled)
i need to get helmet cams on the back sleds for better comparisons but you get the point with these

the drop in kit is different from the the replacment pistons kelsey sells.the pistons have a lower dome height than the regular pistons,so to get your compresion back you need a different head.i don't think you could even run this head with stock pistons

I got about 100 miles on my RK Tek pistons in my turbo Pro over the last couple days before I took out an A arm. Ran great, loving the extra power.

You sure about this? I think he sells just the pistons as well which are the same ones as in his drop in kit with head. Head just raises compression ratio. Im running just the pistons. Would have ordered head if i thought it was going to add anything but i didnt want to raise my compression.

The drop in kit is in fact a different piston than direct replacement piston. The drop in piston changes the port timing and has a different head to match it which equates to more hp.

So, will the simple piston change resolve the reliability issues in this engine alone?
I'm not looking for more compression...been there, done that, and usually ended up w/ det issues on older Doos.
I just want a reliable engine thats not going to break piston/cylinder skirts and break cases and crank shafts...is that so much to ask for Polaris? I'm fine with the 140 HP.

Whats the piston-only kit cost?

Thanks for all the info so far.

I have a bone stock 2012 163 and a 2012 163 with the drop in kit, stacked with a slp pipe, pcv and slp stage 4 map.. I have both stage 4 maps for testing.. {hillclimb and regular public} I will be running them together most of the winter and will have a solid report... you will either see me back here telling everyone how awesome this kit is :bounce:..... or you will never hear from me again..:face-icon-small-sad

****update***01/27/2013
Im running the drop in kit with slp pipe in my '12 pro 163

clocking 8200-8300 climbing
7-10k ft

slp stage 4 map - added 3% fuel on very top throttle positions
1 gal race fuel per tank - ethonal plug is still in..
68g mtx weights - machined 1/2 gram off tips
slp blue/pink
stock gearing
team tied - RKT2 helix
slp red/black..

if I swap out the ethonal plug to non ethonal it would hit the det aound 7k rpm --ish - on my first rides.. put it back and added a little fuel as well as the race gas.. now no issue at all....

that being said, i have no idea what head Kelsey gave me.. .. but i do remember telling him I was ok with running a little race fuel..

and for how it runs........ my arms get a lot more tired this year trying to hold on.. the sled really rips and is night and day different than last year! Highly recommend this setup

I just got my direct replacement pistons and head installed in a brand new motor and will be testing it out tomarrow in Colorado. We ride from 9-12k so it will be interesting to see how this kit works at high elevation. I will report back tomarrow. CHEERS

Just wondering if this kit is the same as the "fix kit" that has been popular with the dragon cfi-4, consisting of a cylinder shim and wiesco pistons with relocated wrist pin?:face-icon-small-con

I have two different kits at home for two 2012 155 pro's. One kit from RK Tek, Pistons and a 13.5 head and one from Terra Alps with pistons shim and 13.1 head. My thoughts on the kits before install.

  • Heads - Both heads are very nicely machined no fav here! Now turn the head over without the domes installed and I'd have to say I like the terra Alps head better. Reason being I don't like how the RK head has such a large area for the coolant to hang out in.... (pressure and flow theory)
  • Domes - Straight up going with Terra Alps on the domes... Hard to get into detail on this because I'm not going to get my pecker slapped for giving out to much info on each part (sorry).
  • Pistons - Each piston is very different in size which should make for a very different running engine do to different port timing. Wossner pistons are very nice OEM pistons are well OEM. Weight between the pistons are very close....
  • Shim - Only from Terra Alps and looks like a shim
  • Other notes - No pin bearing from RK Tek, wish both kits come with new o-rings for the head install. Sorry but I'm not going to give out any pics of parts or any measurements. I head back to work tomorrow so the install won't be complete until the first week of Jan. I'll be on the snow that weekend and I'll be back with a full report. This is a straight up comparison I felt would be cool to try out......... To be continued.........

I ran the kit as posted above and didnt get 100 yards from the truck and sled was DET and bogging at 6500 RPM AND UP. i RUN A 11 PRO WITH NON ETHANOL GAS. Went to my shop and swapped heads back to stock and went back up and sled ran perfect with stock head and rk tek direct replacement pistons. Im gonna call kelsey tomarrow and see what he thinks but it deffinitly leaned it out way to much.

I chatted with Kelsey a few days ago, he did say at higher eleavation there were det code issues but it sounded like it was only on the 13s, he said he was gonna do some testing on the 13s this weekend, but he did still recomend a fuel controller for best results.

Why spend a great deal of money on mods !! But not on fuel ? Det is 90% fuel , but not always. I think vendors sell HP ! Pump gas big HP , and fuel controls , maps ??? Ect! Why not start out with a new set up , 95oct & back into it rather than Det , surprise ! Just a thought !

What cr head? What elevation(at 100 yards from the truck)? What octane fuel?
