My buddy Bruce and I have a permit to run the Westwater Canyon on the Colorado Aug 2. We have room for 25 people. Bruce has all the gear and is going to take care of breakfast and lunch on the 2nd. $60/person to cover the food and permit. We will go down and camp at the launch at the Westwater ranger station on the evening of Aug 1, run the whole thing on the 2nd and come home.

Westwater is the first major rapids section on the Colorado in Utah. I've been on it twice so far this year, going to try and get 2 more this year if I can.

It is a complete kick in the azz. The water is up right now so the rapids are somewhat tamer, I'm hoping it drops below 20,000 cfs by the 2nd, then it will be really fun. :)

If you are interested, want more info, send me a note or give me a call at 801.577.6444.

Ok, I'm bumping this back to the top. Water level has dropped in to the 19000s... it will come on down for the next week so its going to be terrific water. Water temps will be in to the 70s by then too.

I promise we won't scare you too bad, but that at some point during the day you will scream like a little girl.

I would recommend you take "swimmers". I don't know what age that would be, but I would probably not take anyone on this particular trip that is under 13 or 14. They need to be able to be aware of what is going on and follow instructions. They won't be rowing... our boats are oar boats so one oarsman handles it. But Westwater is biggest in the 13,000-15,000 cfs range which is what its looking like it will be. That means Skull, which is the biggest one, is going to be true Class IV.

So when we drop in to some of the rapids everyone needs to follow the oarsman's instructions to hold on, bail water, hunker down or whatever. There is a real chance you may end up out of the boat and have to be able to follow the instructions to point your feet down river and float down to where we can pick you back up. That is the reality of river running.

It is an absolute incredibly fun time. Come along.
