Okay. So I got the new rings, complete top end gasket set. Is there ANYTHING else I need before I tear down the top end ? New ring pins:confused: Engine has 1800kms.

I think that if it were me I would go ahead and put new pistons, rist(sp) pins and bearings in it while it was all apart.

1800K or 1110 miles isn't much time! Your pistons and wrist pins should be ok unless you had some failure in the past. Check 'em out though and the cylinder too for any scratches, gouges, etc.

Not sure what's included in the top end gasket set but depending on what items you remove and how careful you are, you may have a few other gaskets to purchase if you haven't already.

While you are in there pull the rave valves and clean 'em.:D

The ring pins fail on the 04 which allowed the ring to spin and get caught in the ports. New pistons for sure

Never had any problems with the stockers. But then again I rebuilt after one season. I've seen more issues with the ring pin on aftermarket dual and single ring pistons. Food for thought!:beer;

So, wheres the best place to get pistons for these 04's? All this ring talk is got me scared into doin mine BEFORE she blows!:confused:

I've had an 01, 02, 03, 04, 800 and an 06 1000 and the 02 and 03 are the only ones I've ever had apart. Rings and reeds in the 02 and rings in the 03. Only due to the flaking on the moly coating and resulting loss of compression. We shall see on the 04 as it only has 450 mi on it but I have never heard of the pins finding their way out of the pistons on a large scale only ounce in a blue moon have I heard of this. I would take the gamble on rings only but that's just me.

As far as new pistons go I would replace with stock parts, I stay away from seizeco. Or, get RKT's drop in piston kit it's not that much more than a set from Skidoo and more power as well.

I had my 06 800 go down like that, just on 1600 miles, Now it is going to get a crank, New Slp ported cylinders ect. ect. should be a great year!!!

Some people may disagree with me, IMO there is nothing to be worried about. You can do a search about ring pins, read those threads and judge for yourself.

Most engine builders will admit most pistons are resilient and hold up well to the abuse. There may be manufacturing defects, user error, bad luck, etc that can play a role. However, that's with just about everthing we deal with today.

As far as the best place for replacements? If you want to oil-gas-go .... Keep it stock.

As far as bad luck goes, Ive had my share and some very weird stuff destroy a motor in the past. One instance an Autolite platinum plug broke of the center platinum tip and bounced around inside a very well built and expensive SBC. You wouldn't think that something smaller than a millimeter could do so much damage but oh well.

EVERY PERSON I ride with that didn't to a top end (pistons) at around 2000 miles f*cked their motor. Change em or you will regret it.
