Ring gear on turbo ski doo

I know there have been plenty of threads about this topic, but what about on a turbo sled? Is it better to remove the ring gear 0n the primary if you run a turbo 800 or just leave it on?

I.ve seen a 50 - 50 rate of cracking when left on or removed.

my gut says take it off,, its added rotational mass. more mass, more chance of spinning the crank out of phase if you seize under power or blow a belt under power.

but its just my gut feeling.

ring gear

I would not remove ring gear as clutch will be trashed sooner and Crank will fail faster.
Just my two cents!!

I left it on my wife's non turbo SL 500:face-icon-small-blu and when it let loose, it broke both halves of the case!! I know nothing about the new ones, but mine sheared off the bolts; locktite was still on the broken off studs. one bolt held on a little longer than the rest, and slung the ring gear around quite a few times before it broke; CARNAGE!!

I took my ring gear off of my 08 xp in the first month. january of 09.
ran without it on my turbo xp all last year with no problems. over 2000 miles total I believe. crank is still good, but thinking of taking it out soon to maybee ship off to have checked out. atleast going to repack the bearings.
I had 3 buddies with xp's last year that had their crank go out right before the end of the year. all just under 2000 miles. two stock engine, one with slp pipe, and head. all with ring gear.
going to send the clutch off to be balanced before the season starts also.

This whole ring gear thing has been beat to death. Nowhere in the ski-doo racing handbook or ski-doo factory manual does it say that without the ring gear your crank is going to be toast. My buddies shop has a 2 stacks of ring gears 4 feet high that they have taken off of every sled without e-start since 2007. They are a Ski-doo dealer and have never had a problem with crank failure due to the lack of ring gear. Ski-doo has never not paid a claim for a bad crank because there was no ring gear. You honestly believe that a ring gear is going to create more / less vibration by itself? Have you ever weighed all three arms, pins, rollers and weights. I guarantee that they will be off by a few grams every time, unless you take the time to grind them down so that they are all exactly the same. This lack of consistency in arm weight is going to cause WAY more vibration than a ring gear. (NOTE: I am not a ski-doo tech, dealer, or anything other than a normal guy with an opinion!)

Ditch the ring gear if you don't want it on, leave it if you are worried about it.
