Riding with a handicap

Anyone out there in a wheelchair that ride? I am a T-4 para and love to ride, just wondering if anyone else is out there and what you have done to overcome some of the issues of riding a mountain sled in the backcountry.

I have lost track of a guy that used to ride with us here in Utah. He was in a wheelchair but rode. His brother in law went with him every ride and helped him get on or off the sled as needed. He did really well and never held us back.

Haven't talked to him in a few years but I'm betting he still rides.

ive been with a guy who was handicap from the waist down. he absolutley ripped, if i hadnt known before hand i really wouldnt have been able to see a difference. always had a smile on and would always help us get unstuck with the snowbunje...

I ran across a guy in the Snowies a few years back that had a strap-type thing rivited to his tunnel and pulled it over his legs to keep them held in/on the sled. He said he could throw his upper body around enough to get the sled up on a ski to sidehill in the powder. Right before we saw them at the widowmaker his buddies said he put up a highmark and rolled the sled. THey saw the him go under the sled, the track, him pop back up when the sled came over, him go under, track, ect...about 3 times. They couldn't even tell the story they were laughing so hard, but the guy had a great sense of humor and thought it was pretty funny himself. The best part he said, was he'd get stuck and just sit there while his buddies got him out. He said if they pissed him off, he'd just run into the trees and bury himself! LMAO!

I'm pretty sure that some of my riding buddies are paralyzed from the neck up!
Does that count?

In '92 I suffered a T-9,10,11 injury from a motorcycle accident, since then I took to the snow. I have lots of humorous stories about my little escapades. The ones that are the funniest are the ones of snowmobilers coming along and trying to help my friends and family as they were trying to unstick me. You cant imagine how pissed a guy(strangers) will get as you sit on your sled while everyone complains how fat I am,huffin and puffin, while I sneak my lunch out. BTW I like to bark orders about how fast and where I want to be relocated. :) Its all in good fun. I have never held my buddies back too much and am proud to say, my friends always call me when its time to ride. I live in Montana and have sledded all over. My group are boondockin types so we only use the trail to get there and also to uncork the sleds once in awhile. I put zero (none) adaptive aids on my sled. I would be glad to help if there is anything specific you need help with or just wanna talk about.

Let him know it is easier to through your leg over the seat before you get on and if someone sits on the back of the tunnel it is even easier.

I know a lady that drag raced, and rode every day! She is in a wheel chair. I have not seen her since she moved away from West Yellowstone.
