Riding out of Lander - South Pass?

A friend of mine just bought a place north of Lander, towards Fort Washakie. Anyway, just wondering what the closest place or places to ride are from there.

It looks like Togwotee is a couple hour drive. But we've been there and done that many times, looking for some new stuff.

I'm wondering specifically about South Pass. If anyone who has rode there could chime in, I'd like to get a better idea where people park to ride there and what the terrain is like. Have ridden Snowies, Togwotee, Horse Creek, Cora/Pinedale, and right around Jackson. If you could compare to any of those that would be great! Pics are always good too!

I always thought most of the wind river range was wilderness, but maybe there are parts that aren't?

I just found http://www.sledwyoming.com and I see the map shows a trail system in the south pass area. I never knew that, cool.

Still, if anyone has input on the terrain there that would be appreciated.

lander

I live in lander and when i ride above I normally ride from south pass. Its just quicker to get to places from there. Terrin wise its totally different from Tog not near as steep, there is some good climbing back in Christina but you have to be careful not to get into wilderness.

If you are wanting a comparison of South Pass to the other areas you listed; then it would be a 3 or 4 with the others being 8-10.

There are lots of rocks and trees, not very many hills or open meadows. A local could help you find the good spots but there aren't very many.:(

If the high desert gets good snow then that is a good place to ride to from south pass.

I'm not saying it a bad place to ride and its worth the time to ride it once or twice to see for youself, but its not Togwotee or the Snowys.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Are the wilderness boundary markers visible if you're looking for them? Like in togwotee and other places.

Where do you mean by "when i ride above"?

Kind of what I figured, is there a certain high desert area you're talking about, or just riding any high desert around south pass when there's enough snow?

Start with Big Sandy area and just go were ever the snow is.

When there is good snow out there, you can ride for days and not hit the same spot twice.
