Riding Areas Near Telluride?

It looks like Telluride has been getting a lot of snow in the last week. Does anyone know where the riding spots are in that area? I was thinking about making a trip down there but I have no idea where to ride at.

I believe you can snowmobile at Alta Lakes, which is just south of Telluride. I've never snowmobiled there, but I've been back there in the summer. It could be decent snowmobiling. Looks like they run snowmobile tours back there as well.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm driving from Dillon and it looks like Silverton is the same distance and got as much snow so I think we are going to head there if anyone has any advice on that area it would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone know how much they got yesterday or recently? Leaving snowies now. Dust on crust.

Thunder Mountain Lodge Conditions

We are doing pretty well on snow right now. Weather man says lots of snow in the next 3 days and then another good one coming. I was out yesterday and really was surprised at the snow. 970.856.6240 Thanks

There has been quite a bit of weather down here lately. Last Sunday had 2-2 1/2 feet of fresh on a good base. We had snow down to 7500 ft on Wednesday and snow is predicted for Fri and Sat. Hard to know exactly how much new is on the mtn without driving up there. I am guessing it will be epic this weekend too.

Riding near Telluride would be Barlow creek down towards Delores. Alta is a very small area, not worth sledding into unless your cabin is up there. Barlow is generally busy.

Not a good idea to probably ride anything but Molas Pass out of Silverton. The snow is pretty heavy on top of what was a very sun cooked solid base. There will be avy danger. My buddies rode Red Mtn Sunday, lots of slide activity, which is why I went somewhere else.

I have another honey hole out of Ridgway if you are interested. We will ride it Sunday. Maybe Saturday too... PM me if you want to do some tree riding.

Otherwise, go visit Jeff on Grand Mesa. They should have epic snow and he probably knows where it is.

Thanks for the updates guys. For some reason I stoped getting email updates on these post. I just got to Silverton and plan on hitting Molas Pass tomorrow I will post updates on how the snow is. We drove though ridgeway at 7 and it was snowing up high so that might be good. Coming from summit county this place looked decent ... hopefully we can find some decent snow in the trees.

You should have stopped in Ridgway... looked me up and, I would have taken you up Owl Creek pass where the snow you saw was falling;-) Get back in the truck, drive north just past Ridgway and take cty 10 up to Owl Creek Pass. The road gets a little muddy but THIS is where the good riding is in the area.

Given the low Avy danger, you should be able to do some good exploring around Molas and Silverton.

So the report on Molas pass is that there is still decent coverage, but we didn't find anything that wasn't crusted over and hard packed. It was a bit disappointing but it's spring so I should have expected it. We did head up towards Silverton Moutain at the end of the day just to check it out and the snow seemed a bit better there (I'm not sure what that area is called). I wouldn't advise anyone to drive a long distance with the hopes of finding "good" snow down here. The scenery was amazing and the terrain awesome so I do plan on coming back.

Our ride on Sunday, just 30 miles north of Silverton, was awesome. Couldn't find the hard crunchy snow anywhere...

Good advice though, nobody else should bother coming down here. lol

The storms around here since about the last week of March have been kind of weird. There was a 4-5 day span where Telluride got 28", but nothing fell around Durango or the La Plata Mountains, at least not enough to really matter. It seems that these last couple of storms have hit Red Mountain Pass, Telluride, and obviously the Owl Creek Pass area around Ridgway pretty good, but have missed dropping much on anything south of Silverton, and unfortunately Molas Pass is south, as are most of my normal riding areas.
