Rich Bottom End/Idle

EDIT: Pics added below.

I think since I replaced my throttle cable, I've been having a blubbery/fat/rich bottom end and fouling plugs every other ride.

I have dropped pilots from 20 to 17.5, currently have my fuel screw at .75 turns out.

I got to thinking/wondering if this showed up due to the oiler arm being too far open at its fully closed position? I didn't do a good job of taking not on its angle when I replaced the cable..

Could it be a simple case of too much oil at idle causing it to load up so bad?

From time to time it'll spit out a bunch of crap, specially after a roll or being on its side..takes a bit of mid range runnin to clean it up...but if done right I can clean it out...it just can be a pita when tree bashing at low RPMs..

Should I drop to 15s?? Or try to adjust the oiler arm???

On another note, it doesn't seem to be using an overly high amount of oil, it seems normal (or what it was before the cable change)....

Do not jet down to 15's. This info has been relayed to me from Big John and RKT.

Recheck your cable routing and adjustments. I'm guessing this is your problem.

hmm ok, so that makes it sound like too much oil at idle...but if i adjust the oiler 'at the arm' its going to adjust amount of oil through out the whole "pull" or, the whole mid range and full throttle...correct?

i know the throttle/cable itself works fine to the carbs...i can only think its too much oil then..??

honestly going from 20s at 2 turns out to 17.5s at .75 turns out didn't seem to change a thing...and i KNOW it should have, so prob leaning fuel more is the wrong way to go...but...still bit cornfused where to go then exactly.

i had the same issue a while back and it was the choke cable mis-adjusted.

ok, possible, maybe why it broke on me! i could have adjusted the carbs differently when i put the new cable on???

man do i miss the simplicity of the primer... ;P
yeah...its a real complicated device to master...i know... lol

Easy to master if you have been using one since you were 7 years old!!;)

i can't see that the choke was 'pulling' at all, if anything looks like there was slack in it...but this was after i removed it from the housing... i am still doubful on choke issue by looks of it.. i'll get a pick of the oil arm position at rest...see if anyone else can remember or compare to theirs??

Heres a couple pics I snapped of the oiler arm..can anyone give some feedback, look right, wrong, will vary? Hows it look compared to yours, or another?

The oil arm looks ok, Is that a double nut on there? When you flip the throttle ... does it return all the way? How much adjustment do you have in the cable line? The adjustment is located just down from the cable split and should have around 19-20 mm of stretch.

a nut on each side of the bracket, 2 nuts.

i'll check adjuster i never understood how people are measuring that.. i'll get a pic and see what /where i can measure to/from etc

DJ, on my rev the oiler was sticking, I added a spring to help it return. My sled would load up if it sat running and warming up. I found the info on the DooTalk site, it may have been in the TTabs mod shop topic. I used a light spring from Ace hardware and did not notice a big diference on throttle thumb.

To measure the pump cable, at the adjustment point, pull the 2 halves apart so you can see the actual inner cable. Pull until there is no slack and measure the length of the exposed cable.

yep i saw how ttabs did it now. so your basically pulling the oil pump open full? correct?

so shorter than 18mm = richer? longer than 18mm = leaner? (as in more or less oil)

Heres what I got for a measurement, my digital display wasn't working..so.. I just compared this to TTabs pic and it looks close..but maybe a little longer...

Pic attached.

Top line is mm. So is that reading 21 mm??? was unsure how to read since I used the top 2 feelers (like TTabs did) and not the bottom ones. Yeah, I'm sorta noob to caliper. :P

good deal...so 21 mm = leaner than 18 mm? am i understanding that correctly?

and i'm already having "oil fouling" issues at idle....what gives.... oi. quite the game we play! ;)

oh, and it appears the cable IS returning fully every time...with the bit of testing i did, its not hanging up at all..

You are reading them correct DJ, they measure the same on the top
as they do the bottom.

oil consumption

Thanks, I'll check into that one, see if its not returrning fully..but it appears to be..i'll test/play some tonight.. cheap/easy fix if thats all it is...but..skeptical still.

FYI, heres the link for others if they come accross this

Since I put that article on dootalk I have found the oil consumption came more into proper ratios by taking MOST of the free play out of the throttle. I noticed the oil arm would move before all the free play was taken up by the throttle cable. I doubt your problem is caused by excessive oil, more likely a hose is off or leaking, or something related to the carb work. Keep the feedback comming because we all want to help AND learn.
