reverse problem/popping noise

06 switchback 900

when i put into reverse and the sled is on a rough surface (no snow on ground) the reverse will not work. clutch engauges and the track will jump but sled will not move but will make a grinding noise. i have also noticed the last time i was riding i would hear a popping noise coming from the driven clutch intermittingly while at a slow speed whe nyou go to speed up. any ideas? on what i need to look at? thanks in advance.

It sounds like your secondary is sticking. Probably a good time to buy a new spring and some derlin washers from team to put in there and freshen it up.

Thank you for the help. I got some time to check it out today when it's in reverse and you hit the throttle to go the secondary spreads and the belt slips in it. I also noticed that it will slip a little in forward too. The helix and springs are not stock but I'm not sure what it has in it. It came with the stock parts in a box with the sled. Should I disassemble the secondary and check for broken parts?

when was the LAST time the secondary spring was changed? most likely a broken spring or extremely sacked out..

if you have never changed the spring, i would assume you havent done the primary spring either..

if you remove the springs during the summer, you will only get 2 years MAX out of a good spring, and if you leave in year round...1 year max

I have never changed either springs. The sled is new to me I just picked it up this fall. So I would be better off changeing all springs then? Are they hard to change?

Yes I would change both springs, confirm helix you have and also weights...

Do a search on here for clutching, I have spelled out the clutching on the 700 many many times and It will tell you everything you Need.

The primary spring change is super easy..just remove the 6 bolts on the primary cover and pull off, it will hang up on the spring so just work with it. Install new primary spring and When you reinstall the clutch cover, make 100% sure you line the "X" on the cover to the "X" on the inner clutch..so the balance is the same..and your done

Secondary will require a special tool, the dealer can change it for you like $10-15. It's literally a 10 min job, but the helix bolts will be a major pain...they always are...I would have them do it..the tool is $65-75..

It may not even have an electronic reverse (er) helix in it. Look on the helix and see if the letters er are stamped in it at the end of a string of numbers. Likewise, some of the team er helix's had to be filed out a little bit to get the to catch every time. Betting it's all in the helix and that it isn't an er one at all.
