Looking to go sledding next week I was thinking revelstoke but heard mixed reviews on how the snow is..... Can anyone confirm ? If not there where is there good snow in Alberta or BC

Ya no new snow. There ten days ago an was all settled an hot up top. Should be a perfect time after this week. Heading there Thursday again looking good!!

So I don't have a ton of mountain experience, your saying if it does snow all this fresh snow they are calling for it'll be bad avalanche conditions ? Or are the conditions already bad.

If refer the condition to be Ball Bearing. And there is a simple home test you can do from the comforts of your living room.... Take a smooth hard back book and pour a slight amount of table salt on the hard cover of the book while slightly tilting the book simulating the angle of a mountain slope. This simulation demonstrates how volatile the snow pack will be on all aspect at Revy. Be safe if your going

Gunna be riding Revy this weekend too. Staying in trees the whole time. I usually only make it to the bowls 4 days outta 30-40 I ride in Revy a year. This weekend is definatly not going to be one of those 4.

High = Bad.
Buried/preserved surface hoar and facets within the snowpack = likely to stay Bad for a while.
Considerable with buried surface hoar and facets = Still Bad. Natural activity might slow down, but rider triggered still very probable.
Moderate ESPECIALLY with buried surface hoar and facets = Can be bad cause most toss caution to the wind when it hits Moderate. Sleds are big triggers.

If you dont understand the avy report, especially now when its BRIGHT FREAKIN RED... Good luck out there. Take a course!!!!! This is not a normal BC snowpack and likely will remain as such for a bit.

I like the book on salt on the table explanation, and like salt under a book on a table it will likely remain until something moves it or washes it away.

They r getting HAMMERED with pow. Hi ways closed though this am cuz Avy danger. Will be a unreal weekend in the trees (keeping safe) if we can get to town haha.

You could generalize and say that every snow fall brings increased avalanche danger in the days during/after it. The larger the snowfall, the higher the danger/consequences.

If it has been a long time without new snow, and then you get a big dump, that tends to be the worst combo. The ball bearing analogy is a good one.

ok thanks for the explanation. I understand red means danger and so on i was just wondering what to look for and where to stay to be relativly safe, im assuming thats gonna be below the tree line and playing around in the meadows and stuff. also i dont go alot but i do plan on taking a course.

any news on how long the highway will stay S/D ? let me know if anyone is driving through.

Although I like your book example, the problem with a persistant weak layer isnt the salt sliding off the book, its he book sliding off the salt. Take 2 hardcover books, put salt on one and the other on top. Then tilt. The way the upper book moves suddenly off the lower book is very similar to what you would see in a column test in a snow pit right now. The bottom book is the old snow, the salt is the buried surface hoar, faceted snow, whatever the current weakness is, and the top book is the new storm slab.

If you just sprinkle salt on a book and tilt it so the salt pours off you are simulating slough, which is far easier to manage and deal with then a cohiesive slab, cause it goes a little at a time. Sure a slough can put enough pressure on a snowpack to trigger a deeper weakness, but in general slough is one of the ways snowpacks settle a little bit at a time. Constant/regular slough is the reason it is possible to ski/snowboard the huge steep spiney walls in AK you see in ski/snowboard vids. They constantly slough and never build large destructive slabs because they are so steep.

Dig a pit out there right now, Id be willing to bet you see layers that look lke 2 hardcover books with salt between em. Hope that makes sense.

Guy died here on boulder not far from where we were yesterday afternoon. (Not too many details yet) Things r bad. Flat deep tree riding for these guys and it's bin fine. RIP to our fellow rider.

It Was some of the deepest powder i have ever ridden in, chest deep up at boulder. played it safe and stayed in the trees or flat areas but still had some cracks happen and snow shift.

very sorry to hear that guy passed away up at boulder. Ride safe if your headed that way.
