RE's Dirt Ride?

There is very limited OHV access up on the divide. Just a few of jeep roads and one short section of single track. Most of the area is hike/bike only. The south side of 40 has a bit more riding but mostly jeep roads as well.

There is some fun riding up there but it is limited. The one single track section that runs from Buff south to Round lake is fun. (the divide trail) The atv trail from the end of that trail drops down the east side of the divide is interesting as well. Neither will give you much perspective to the sledding areas as they are pretty much in thick trees most of the time. The Grizzly Creek trail on the east side is an awesome single track trail that heads north about 70 miles. The Northern half is atv/2-track and the southern half is moderate single track. BUT it runs the east side of the Zirkels just on the boundry of the wilderness so it is not in the sledding area. The jeep roads on the south side run all the way to Gore pass and are a pleasant ride but not technical. You can see a bit of the popular sledding areas from those roads.
All in all, it is not a bad way to spend a weekend in July or August to escape the heat but not much more that a joy ride. Except the Grizzly trail. It is moderate to difficult and requires multiple creek crossings that can be deep in the spring. Very similar to the Rainbow trail down south by Salida.
BTW, I don't think there is a legal way to ride trails from the Ears to Buff. I have'nt spent much time looking for one. We usually ride out of the Buff end and head over to Griz.

Chris, grab yourself a compound bow and go hunting for a day with me. It will freak you out to see what lurks beneath the 15+ feet of snow and it is funny to see the trail markers 25' above the ground.
