If the engine is warm when you tried the rer. , and you have stock rings . I would wager that they are shot . get chrome replacement rings from Big John.

+2, If your compression is not where it should be the engine will not maintain enough pressure in the cylider to kick the piston back down to start running in reverse.

I'd recommend Big John's Trail torquer kit with the chrome rings and all the other goodies to wake that motor up while you're at it.

It made a big difference in my '05 800.

What is your altitude? I ride at 8-11,000' and find I have to give it some gas to increase the RPM to compensate for the altitude power loss---depending on the situation I sometimes jack up the idle R's to 1,800--done this on three DOOs from 02 to 04. I also cut the heads .020" to regain some compression.

Don't go beyond .020 unless you have a good supply of fresh gas which could also affect your idle power.
 
3-8000' I Pulled The Raves Out Checked The Ring's They Look Ok. Cleaned Up The Raves. Lots Of Carbon Billed Up On The Tops Of The Pistons.
Maybe Jet Down. I Beleave Still Stock Jetting.
 
The rings were an issue on all DOO 800's prior to '06. They flake. Not many dealers would warrentee them until the sled had no compression left.
Replace the rings !!!
Trust me, the rings will require replacement if not now, very soon.
Big john will ship to you but there is an issue with available premium gas, I think, in Canada? This kit increases the compression enough that you have to run 92 octane for best results. The candian kit has a few different specs.
When I first started talking to him about his kit one of the first things he asked was if I was a Canuck?
 
Its your rings. I looked in the exhaust port and the rave port and couldnt see the flakeing. When you pull down your engine and look with a magnifiing glass you will see the issue. Also my stock jetting was to rich...500 mains, I went down to 480 mains and ride the same elevation as you. Dino
