Repost " A look inside the Crater at Mt.Baker

What's wild is how much its changed. Back in the 90's we used to drop in at that spot. Stand next to the sulfur plume. Then you could climb up conditions permitting and park your sled right on the very top of the mountain. Maybe you still can if there's more snow? Haven't riden up there in years.

And for those who don't know, the edge of the crater is in Wilderness. Make sure you know where the boundaries are. A few hundred feet isn't worth giving the USFS and anti-motorized groups ammunition to close down Baker...

Powderboy---that is not where we dropped in--it was little ways back from where that was taken--and it varies alot on the changing conditions every trip up as to whether or not you can even get in the crater.

Newtrout--I thought the wilderness line went down the middle of the crater??

I will admit--back many many many moons ago several of us use to go into the crater several times a year--before we knew of wildeness area--I know--the days of ignorance--But I would bet it has been 10 years since I have been up to the crater.

Good info.

But as stated--I have not been there and do not plan on going back up there--ever--I have seen to many people eaten or close to it by going across the glacier up high--I have helped pull a couple out as well of the crevases.

More good info.

But have yet to see a map with a picture of the top of the mountian.

The last good HD map I saw showed the wilderness going almost dead center through the crater--So that is the info we used.

I'm going to call the Mt.Baker Ranger Station today and see exactly where the line goes at the Crater!

I have helped in a fatality rescue as well.Pay close attention to your route if your not used to riding on a glacier.

been up there 4 times..but no more! Mt.Baker Ranger Station looked at their map today...ALL of the Crater is off limits to sleds..it IS wilderness area!

My last time up was 1996. I was lucky that day I didn't get hurt and total my buddy's turbo I was riding. Dropped in and tried unsuccessfully to climb up to the top. Glad its wilderness. I can stop thinking about going back up and facing my demons.

Confusion is totally understandable IMO. The FS posts a crappy map on their site that implies the legal zone (point of the triangle) ends at the crater, but in reality, it ends at Sherman Peak, which is the pinnacle east of the crater. Here is a map:
