Replacing decking on Sled Deck

Thought I would share my project. Have been looking for quite some time to replace deck. All in all, I decided to use plywood with a deck coating, that I hope works better than the "Home Depot" stuff. Instead of putting on any treated or marine grade ply, I went with 3/4" AC Plywood. I then found a deck treatment product at the local lumber yard. I have never used this, but thought I'd give it a shot. I coated the edges with at least 3 coats, the bottom side with one thick coat, and the top with 4 coats. I used two gallons, and it can be tinted whatever color you want. I chose black, to keep it simple. The product goes on very easy and dries pretty quickly. The whole project took most of the day and about a 6-pack of PBR....I couldn't find stainless screws, so just used sheet metal screws. I pre-drilled. Think I have approximately $200 into the costs, excluding the Superglide slides.

Looks great!
I used black solid color stain on my old sled deck, old plywood. It held up great for at least one winter (I sold it then).
Question, why do the ski glides not go all the forward? They'll chew through the coating pretty quick if you're clamping the skis down on it for transit.

If you store it indoors it should last a couple winters. Mine stored outdoors destroyed the coating over summer. I am switching to marine plywood so I don't have to do it every year.

That was my bad....I only ordered one box of Glides.....More coming.

Agree. I might just have to cover for the summer as I don't have enough space indoors....YET! I see Lotus is doing some kind of composite on their sled decks. Couldn't find the product and I imagine is cost a pretty penny.

Looks very nice .. and hard to beat with a $200 budget.

If money were no object and you wanted to save time look at the pre made stuff from NUDO.com. Premade sled deck with HDPE sealed to the plywood. I only know about this stuff after buying a trailer recently.

Before finding Nudo my method was to use a 2 part wood epoxy resin and dilute the first coat so it soaks into the wood. After a couple coats the last coat was mixed with clean sand and rubber "chips" for traction.

Anyway you deck looks awesome. :face-icon-small-win Would be nice to see pics after some real world useage.

I'll definitely post pix after the season.

Nice job, looks great.

Ive done similar to an open 3 place trailer several years ago. I used 2 part epoxy floor coating with a bunch of silica sand mixed into it. Four years of use and it held up great and it sat outside year round.

Did you add color so the epoxy was not oxidized by the sun?

No, I just wanted to have it black. I looked at other colors, but I felt black would be best for the winter to conduct heat to help melt any ice/snow. Might work.....might not.

i have nudo in black and grey for sale in alberta canada. 3/4 thick.

I did that 3 years ago. My deck needs replacement. It buckled and the plywood layers delaminated. The deck coating never wore out.

Anybody know where to get marine grade plywood?

Also, for summer storage, even if you lean it up on the headache rack so its not black decking facing the sun/weather all year it definately helps keeping them from getting wrecked. The thermal cycles on all that stuff being black is hard on screw holes as its expanding and contracting lots.

I see your in great falls, so you know how that MT sun just wrecks things left out.
