Is there any good rope you can buy from say Home Depot, Menards, Ace, etc. that holds up good, but is cheaper then getting one from the dealer?

Well my buddies rope snapped (old) and we were hoping to replace it tomorrow.

Hardware stores should have soft brayed nylon in the size you need. Rope has a pull rating on the package get the highest. As the rope broke there maybe other trouble inside the recoil housing. If this is your first rebuild be careful with the re-whined spring they like to fly out at great speed.

Thanks, I've taken a recoil housing apart once. And I never wanted to do it again. I really dread that recoil spring... Is there a way to take off the spool so the spring doesn't fly off???

yes

If you have the time...buy a new spring. It comes already tied. I had this happen to my sled earlier this year. I recruited some friends to come over and help me get it back together. I had been through this rodeo before and was really aware of the uncoiling spring problem. I informed my buddy to be really careful with the new spring so it doesn't uncoil. He promptly screwed around with it until it came uncoiled. I am thinking if you had a little miniature clamp you could fasten to the old spring and some how pry it out with a little screwdriver and zip tie it that may work...94 fordguy posted a pretty good description on here a while ago on how to do it.

It is usually real easy to replace the rope. You can do it without taking the drum out. thats what the little notch is for in the rope drum, it allows you to wind the rope on. Wind it up until the srping is tight then back it off two turns. I would not use hardware store rope unless I had no alternatives. 4Z sells the good stuff but if you need one right away any sled shop will have decent enough rope. REI has mountain climbing rope that is very good too. I believe 7mm rope is the diameter.

replacing rope

No need to remove the spring. With the tension off the spring remove the old rope thread in the new rope and put in a good knot. Pull up a loop in the rope between the housing and the spool . Put the rope in the small notch in the spool and just wind it tight. Double check the tension is enough to pull the rope into the spool.

If you need it tomorow, just go to just about any motorsports dealer.

If you CAN wait a couple days, Lynn (4z) is the man for the fantom rope.
Contact "fantom" on here too.

Fastrax can get you in the right place also.

why not pull start it from the primary clutch for a day or two until you can get the right rope? if i remember correctly, about 4' of webbing works well. 2 or 3 wraps around the clutch. don't wrap it around your fist in case it gets caught in a running primary.

Hmm just got a new winch rope real nice blue same as phantom only blue think it was 30.00 for 50ft

Google Armor cord and spend the $20 they guarantee the rope for life.. Used it on my 975 and didn't have any issues
