Replaced tunnel no VIN # ?? Now what?

Last season I hit a tree hard enough to buckle my tunnel. '13 Pro to be exact.I purchased a new tunnel with bulkhead and swapped everything over to new chassis. The new rebuild sled now has no VIN # now. We love to travel and ride several other states including Washington where we reside. I have a registration for sled and current tags. I want to cross borders into Canada and other states to ride. Wanting to be legal and not get my sled confiscated what do I do now?

Your reply sounds logical. Do you know first hand this is my legal won't get confiscated solution. Specially for US/Canadian border crossing in and out. I even called Washington State Patrol and they had no answer for me. Reading treads on registration decals locations on sleds VIN# in Utah are a must. What do they do for replaced tunnels and or aftermarket replacements.

make it look nice and trim it nice..and print off a copy of this thread to keep in your glove box just in case along with the purchase receipt of your new parts.....

If any issue at all tell them I said it was ok to cut the vin out and rivet it...

Contact your State Dept of motor vehicles. They may either authorize your old VIN to be restamped or reassign a new VIN. Keep your purchase receipts for the new tunnel and a copy of the accident report if one had been filed. They guys at the State Patrol probably did not know since the probably seldom deal with snowmobiles.

Hopefully you have kept your old tunnel. My mod sled had an after market tunnel, never had any issues and when I sold it the old tunnel went with the sled.

Always wondered if it would have been OK to stamp the VIN on the new tunnel but never followed though.

It was reading sdsnocop responses to the registration post that got me concerned. The inforcement officers here in WA only look for current tabs. WA doesn't have titles.I like the idea of restamping new tunnel with the original VIN # but I couldn't find a way to do it with out making it look like an altered number and bring more attention to issues hard to explain in the field or at a border.

I built my '12 Pro from the ground up and used a service chassis which did not have a VIN. Went to the secretary of state and they issued me a VIN and registered it as "2012 Assembled Snowmobile". I stamped the VIN into the tunnel.

But the few places I contacted for insuring the sled said they couldn't insure an "Assembled Snowmobile". So keep your old VIN that's registered as a "Polaris ..." and either rivet the old VIN on your new sled or stamp the VIN into the new chassis.

Still have original tunnel. Not really wanting to cut out Vin#. Kinda saving it in case I hit another tree and probably will or one of my buddies who all have same make. There are several guys out there now making stiffening parts and straightening parts just for the very same reasons. Polaris Pro's are great sleds but are very weak in the tunnel. Kept all my receipts $4000 plus worth. So do I put them in a baggie and registration and pack it around in my sled? I'm concerned about leaving registration in sled in case it's stolen, it's the same as handing over a title. I started to look into having it lazer etched but can't find a machine that can do it on my new tunnel. Hand stamping it will look altered.

I relize you are in Washington, but in California what we have to do in this situation is take the old tunnel in with the newly "assembled" sled to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Then they have the California Highway patrol (State Police) issue a new vin sticker that is affixed to the tunnel.

If you can't do something like that in Washington, then I say cut the old vin out and tig weld it to the new skid.

You are not the first person to do this, your state likely issues a vin replacement for situations just like yours. My old rmk had one issued to it, it had a tison tunnel, it was a sticker, that was in oregon.

Cut the old vin off your old tunnel, cut a hole in your new tunnel and weld it in, grind is smooth and your good to go, no one would be able to tell.

You don't even have to title sleds in Washington to get tags so you can get registration without it anyways.

I've never been asked for paper work going to BC..

vin on aftermarket tunnel

dude, whatever you do do, get it figured out before you go across the border. i sold a turbo apex with an aftermarket tunnel to a guy in canada. had it shipped to niagara falls and then he was going to trailer it over. customs saw it didn't have a vin and impounded it. i had to provide pics, receipts, and a stamped plate with the vin to customs before they would release it. i seriously thought i was going to have to go there to get it figured out.

state

if you call someone in your licensing department and still have the old tunnel with chin on it. they will issue you a new one. just make sure you keep the old one.

I would add that having pics of your laborous fiasco of switching all over should help too. If not on you, then maybe at least laoded to photobucket or whatnot where you could show them if you doo get into a jackpot.

My tunnel VIN hasn't matched my sled in prolly 8 yrs or more. I ride primarily in Canada, and when not there - in the west. NEVER in my home state! I don't get too excited about it - but what's legal?

'Course - if you are comming home from Revy - it would be ***_u_med to be stolen unless you can prove otherwise eh? :face-icon-small-fro

i replaced my tunnel once. Take some pics of the old damaged tunnel and make sure in one pic you can see the VIN number. Keep those pics handy when traveling. Keep another set at home.

After talking to forth state agency I'm directed to motor vehicle license agency and simply get a new VIN #. Maybe just a sticker with a number on it??I'll post soon as I can get there and get one. Real test will be at the border with Federal agencies...... Good advise to keep good records of receipts and pictures.

Doing this is a federal offense and will get both the sled and owner impounded
Go to state police and get it inspected and they will issue a vin # to take to dmv
