after removing the cotter pin in your top gear do you:
1.) replace with a new one
2.) reinstall the same pin
3.) discard the pin and retorque to spec

i have never seen the nut on the top gear loosen and am considering just tossing the pin and retorque to spec.

what do you guys think??

absolutely put it back in!!!

That nut will only stay on if it is pinned in. Don't try it without the pin, too much to lose if it backs off. You can reuse the old one (if in good shape), i have done this in the past with no problems, however, i've also broken the pin when bending the tips over on second usage (that cotter pin metal fatigues once bent over and then straightened, like the tab on a pop can). It is cheap to replace, any similar size metal pin will do from the local hardware store. I recommend putting new one for the $1.00 it costs, or reuse old one if in a bind and you get it to stay together, just DO NOT leave the hole empty.

NAH!
Pi$$ on these guys!
They just don't know how to live!

That castle nut makes a beautifully round cirle rat where the Bombi symble is!

I've done it - and I know another fella that has too.

My rule USTA be that you could use a cotter pin twice - but not three. I've recently ammended that rule. :o

Are you kidding? Replace it with an 6 penny nail. LOL Way cheaper than the 99 cent cotter pin.

you guys are paying way too much for a stupid (yet very important) cotter pin...

go to the hardware store and buy a cotter pin kit or go to harbor freight and get the same for less, you get a billion or so cotter pins you can use anywhere.... for about 4 bucks...

or, take them from work like i doo....
