Removing Spindle Bushings

I'm going to powder coat my spindles and need to remove the bushings. Anyone found a way to do this w/o damaging them? I briefly tried and it and was already dinging up the plastic. I was going to buy new ones but you need four (for two spindles) and that comes to $45 on Babbitts.

I think they are pretty tough to get out. Not sure it would be worth the time to come up with a smaller gear puller type device to reach in and catch the inside lip and then pull them out.

I bought new ones for mine and the dealer said he uses a step drill to cut the shoulder off, then presses them the rest of the way out. Figured if it took a press to push them, it would take a lot of force to pull them out for re-use.

Thanks. I thought they were just going to pop out. Then I figured I would just buy new ones. What a crock! $45 for a set of four. Cheap plastic part that isn't so cheap.

Mine are brass in my '10. They are showing cracks and slop so I will be replacing mine and installed a grease zerk before the snow flies.

I actually used a brass punch, there is a slight space between the two pieces.
I had all four come out with no issues, make sure to use powder coating tape so you can get them back in.

How about using a flywheel pilot bearing puller... lots of Orielly and AutoZone will loan the tool for free.

I've heard from a couple people that theirs are brass. Mine is plastic. Guess Po saved some weight there too! They've held up just fine though. Thanks for the input, I'll go at them again.

Heres a thought, I know you would only have to replace one on each side if you got one out and destroyed it. Personally I would just get new ones, you will spend more time trying to save them than getting new ones.

I am going by the dealer today and I will see what they do, lots of PC done for costumers there.

if your just going to powder coat your spindles just put a bolt with the proper size washers on each side and send em out to the coater.. that's what I have done on my 2011,2012, and this season on my 2013.

I used a blind hole bearing puller tool that I bought at harbor freight for $20. Word of caution, I anodized my Pro spindles so it was no big deal, but on my cat, it took a few hours to clean the powder out of the holes and still have it look nice before I cold reinstall my bushings. Take time on the prep and save time later

My powder coater has a bunch of high temp silicone plugs and will plug whatever you don't want coated. I would guess most will do this if you ask.

I have to take out the plastic or it will just melt while in the oven. If they were brass I would just have them tape them off while powder coating. I'll ask my PC guy to use silicone plugs (zerks, lube holes, bolt holes).
