Removing and reusing new grips

My kids brand new rev 550 fan was rolled and the bars snapped in half, is there any way to remove and reuse the grips and warmers. In the past I have always cut them off and installed new, but there is only 150 miles on these.

Thanks

Back on the old forum board there were threads about this.
One I remember was using a a compressed air 'blow-gun' to pressurize the inside of the handlebar, from the opposite side of the grip being removed. The idea being the air pressure would help push the grip as you attempt to work it free.
Seems like you would have have to get a thin 'awl' under the grip to help break it loose.
Dunno-never tried it myself.
Maybe someone else remembers more details.

Yep, use a blow gun on one end and pull on the other grip, then repeat. Works quite well, be carefull with using awls and screwdrivers, they can damage the heating elements under the grips.

My opinion is that the time you'll spend trying to do this is better spent working for a couple of hrs of OT to pay for the new grips and handwarmers. You MIGHT be able to get the grips off (doubtful) but you wont get the handwarmers off intact.

You'll probably spend a lot of time trying to salvage something that is not salvagable...you'll end up frustrated and pissed, and have to go buy new grips and warmers anyway. Save yourself the frustration and just go buy a new set (if you were my buddy I'd give you hell and tell you to "loosen the purse strings, alice!!" ) lol

good luck!

Use compressed air in the hole in the end

Use air to get the grips off I have done it several times. Next time you put them on put in male pipe thread protectors the same size as the ID of th handlebar (orange ones sometimes red) when you apply the air in the small hole it forces it through the grip contact area and it pops off. (both sides) without them you only get one side off easily.

as for the warmers I have tried and wasted several hours I would suck it up, cuss and go get new ones. But try you my get lucky I havent.

I use a blow gun with a skinny nozzle. The air pressure will seperate the grips from the bar and you can slide them on or off. The handwarmers can be peeled off if your really careful. Put them on the new bar with a bit of 3m glue and they should be good to go.

I do not think that the 550 fan grips have holes in the end of them.
I use a 7/8" wrench on the end of the grip and hit the wrench with a hammer to remove the grip.

Use a blow gun with a rubber tip, and pry up the edge of the grip (closest the controls) and stick the blowgun in there. Work the grip around with one hand while maintaining air pressure with the other. It'll take a couple minutes per side, but it's easily doable.

Handwarmers are best taken off with CAREFUL application from a heat gun, and a razorblade. I've done this several times, you just need to be patient and not get the elements too warm or they'll tear.

I put a set of 1 1/8" tapered bars from my dirt bike onto my sled and wanted to retain the factory hot grips. I heated the end of the grips with a heat gun and twisted and removed the grip as it got warm. When I installed the grip back on my new bars I used 5 minute epoxy and heated the grip and slid them back on. It really worked well on these hard compound grips.
