Refurbish a 166 belt?

I've got a pile of "glazed" 166 belts, that aren't popping cord yet. With 166s no longer being made, and not wanting to switch to 383s. Does anybody know if it's possible to refurbish a 166? Can I give it a quick once over w/some sand paper to rough it up again and take the glaze off in hopes of giving it a second life of sorts, or is there something I can do to achieve the same effect?

I do have some new 166s that I have yet to use, but before I toss the old ones: figured I'd just make this post and see if anybody else is doing anything of the sort to get a little more life out of a belt that isn't necessarily trashed, but not at peak performance either.

huh, even for mtn riding? Once I realized I had used up my last 166 (and the local dealer had no more) I ended up with a 383 (haven't installed it yet). I started reading all the belt threads I could. I thought I read somewhere the -288 was a harder compound or something not as good for mtn riding? Maybe I'm confusing it with one of the other belts people were talking about.

If so, is it a direct replacement for the 166? Any changes I need to do, or things I should be aware of? Will my deflection need to be changed? Is it the same lenght?

X2 for the 288!
(of course don't listen to me, we don't have much mtn. riding in Colorado)

288 is the best belt i,ve run. Worth the coin,Switch and you will see much better consistency in RPM,s and last

Yes. You MAY want to make a slight pin weight change running the -288 vs -166, but most guys are good with nothing more than a clicker change assuming clutching is good to begin with. The -288 might show low RPM for the first 50-100 miles until it gets broken in so don't make any changes until you get some miles on it.
