I see very little reason to use a lube in the recoil at all. All working componants are plastic, and plastic is by nature a "self lubricating" material.
If you doo use a grease, I would reccommend a light weight type, and very sparingly at that. A heavy grease can bugger up the works when it is really cold out by either not letting the mechanism twist in like it's supposed to, or sometimes not recoil all the way.
I don't think that I have ever added grease to a recoil ever. But I don't make a habit out of wiping the old off either. If you completely cleaned it up, maybe a dab of whatever you have laying around should be good enough... (not wheel bearing grease!)
