Recent Convert, Observations and Questions

Hi all.
Recent convert to SnowBikes from years as an infrequent sledder, and full time commuter/dual sport motorcyclist (as least as much as the ice allows).
Bought a KTM 525SX fitted with a 2moto kit & Simmons ski last week. Rode about 40 miles this past weekend, much of that on groomed trails. Twitchy and darty on the trails, this thing does not seem to respond to forward weight transfer to plant the front. 4th gear on hardpack was frightening. Felt like riding a dirtbike with no air in the front tire.
Softer snow was much better. Predictable handling returned when the sun warmed the trails too.
I am curious if it is a simple as a suspension setting? I have heard there is a fix with a new ski. Any part name/number for that particular ski?
Thanks in advance.
Christian

I think the new ski is only being offered with new MH kits at the moment. Not sure when it will be available to the rest of us.

Simple solution, get off the groomed trail. They really don't handle great on hard snow, even with the new ski it's not how I'd like to spend a day.

Where do you live? Maybe you can get some new snowbike buddies to ride with.. also, even when riding with sled usually there is some stuff you can play in off to the side that they won't touch. Once you play off the trail more you won't want to have sleds with you on every ride.

If you run 80 % trail you need to use the Ad Boivin ski.
It stays flat as you lean into a turn and works the best of all the snowbike skis in hard pack trail stuff.
It is not as good as the MH ski in carving powder but it does rule the trails.

I am in Southern Oregon. Last weekend went riding in Plumas County, Ca.
Unfortunately I need to stay with the trail guys, and hope to increase their off trail time to match my preferences.
2Moto has an adjustable ski mount. It was already in the recommended for trail rearmost position.
P.O. weighed 50 lbs more than me. Now to adjust the sag on the rear Ohlins. Next will be raising the fork tubes.
Trying to compare the 2Moto Trail Tamer to the MH ski(which apparently has the same saddle as the 2Moto, so it's interchangeable).
Anybody done this already?
I have no info on the AD Boivin ski. Link please.
Thanks.

Almost 3 times the power :face-icon-small-ton

Top heavy and mechanically a bit weak lots of maintenance and fixing

if you ride hard.

They sure do work though.

The problem was that the snowhawk was way ahead of its time.

Off Topic: Is there any advantage of a Snowhawk over that of a Timbersled setup?

I can tell everytime I watch the McCurdy brothers films where they mix the two machines, but Mtn-Doo's KX500 and Carbondaddy's CR500 seem like they could fill the gap, the turbo four strokes are for the well to do, If I had that much extra money to spend, more bike kits would be my choice to ruin my sled friends for life!

I rode a snowhawk for about 15 minutes in Cooke City. While I appreciate the power and what some riders can do with these things, I wish I could have those 15 minutes of my life back.

That's funny, sounds like everybody's fifteen min's of fame!

I've ridden several, you just have to relax and let the machine do the work, we only learn this after trying to win the wrestling match, it wins every time, usually just over 15 minutes for most.

If your phisically fit at any age the machines are awesome, like manhandling an adventure bike vs our snow bikes that tame a 450 into a fun CRF230F.

Trail help on it's way

Ordered the new Timbersled ski, will try it out next weekend!

Edit:
New ski direct bolt on, but beware, the bike now is balanced on the center keel on hard surfaces(shop or trailer). Building a ski dolly for that issue.
Did not get to ride it yet, waiting for a chance to test it out.

Silent or shy readers.

You should put more contact info in your post, looks like 740 views on your thread, probably 5 or ten of those folks live just around the corner from you and could possibly join you off trail. :face-icon-small-blu

try the Pro Moto Billet "fastway ski mod"-- having the center scag makes them more predictable
