Suspect pleads not guilty in soldier's death
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A Muslim convert who already was under federal investigation pleaded not guilty Tuesday in what police called a likely "political and religious" attack that killed a young soldier at a military recruiting center.

Abdulhakim Muhammad, 23, of Little Rock, was charged in Monday's death of Pvt. William Long, 23, of Conway outside an Army-Navy Career Center in a west Little Rock shopping center. He pleaded not guilty to a capital murder charge and was ordered held without bail.

A prosecutor said Muhammad admitted shooting Long and another soldier "because of what they had done to Muslims in the past."

An FBI-led joint terrorism task force based in the southern United States has been investigating Muhammad since he returned to the United States from Yemen, a law enforcement official said. The suspect had been arrested and jailed in Yemen at some point for using a Somali passport, the official said. The time of that arrest was not immediately clear.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, was not authorized to discuss the investigation.

An FBI spokesman in Little Rock did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Pat Harris said no decision has been made on whether to pursue federal charges against Muhammad. "We're consulting with a lot of people on what, if any, charges can be filed against him," Harris said.

Both Arkansas and federal court systems permit executions for capital crimes.

Long and Pvt. Quinton Ezeagwula, 18, of Jacksonville, Ark., had recently completed basic training and had never seen combat. Ezeagwula was hospitalized in stable condition.

Police Chief Stuart Thomas said Muhammad, previously known as Carlos Bledsoe, was a convert to Islam and was not part of any broader scheme to attack the American military.

Interviews with police show he "probably had political and religious motives for the attack," the chief said.

"We believe that it's associated with his disagreement over the military operations," Thomas said.

Police Sgt. Cassandra Davis said Tuesday it wasn't known when Muhammad began planning the attack.

Deputy Prosecutor Scott Duncan said Muhammad told investigators that "he would have killed more soldiers had they been in the parking lot." Long and Ezeagwula were targeted as they stood outside the recruiting center smoking cigarettes.

Muhammad did not speak during the brief hearing before Little Rock District Judge Alice Lightle.

John Rehrauer, spokesman for the Pulaski County jail, said the department was handling Muhammad as it does other high-profile cases.

"He is in some protective custody, in a higher-security unit in a cell by himself," Rehrauer said.

He said he didn't know of any threats against Muhammad and said jailers did not believe he was in any greater danger than previous high-profile people handled at the prison.

The two soldiers had recently completed basic training and had volunteered for a program to recruit others to the military, said Lt. Col. Thomas F. Artis of the Oklahoma City Recruiting Battalion, which oversees the Little Rock office.

"They can show the example: 'Here's where I was, and here is where I am,'" Artis said.

A police report said Muhammad told investigators he observed two soldiers in uniform, drove up to the recruiting center and began shooting.

"He saw them standing there and drove up and shot them," Lt. Terry Hastings told The Associated Press. "That's what he said."

Police arrested Muhammad along a highway moments after the shootings. Police said an assault rifle and other weapons were found in his vehicle.

In addition to the capital murder count, Muhammad is accused of committing 16 counts of a terroristic act. Thomas said most additional counts resulted from the gunfire occurring near other people.

The suspect's father, Melvin Bledsoe of Memphis, Tenn., hung up on a reporter who called about his son's arrest Monday night.

FBI tracked murderer of soldier?posted at 7:55 am on June 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Send to a Friend | Share on Facebook | printer-friendly So much for that law-enforcement approach to the war on terror. ABC News reports that Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, the man arrested for killing one soldier and wounding another in front of a recruiting station in Arkansas, had already tripped enough alarms at the FBI to have the Joint Terrorist Task Force open an investigation when he returned from Yemen:
The suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of one soldier and the critical injury of another at a Little Rock, Ark., Army recruiting booth today was under investigation by the FBI’s Joint Terrorist Task Force since his return from Yemen, ABC News has learned.
The investigation was in its preliminary stages, authorities said, and was based on the suspect’s travel to Yemen and his arrest there for using a Somali passport.
The suspect, Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, 24, had changed his name from Carlos Leon Bledsoe after converting to the Muslim faith.
He offered no resistance to police when arrested. In fact, Muhammad/Bledsoe has already begun cooperating, telling authorities he planned a much larger killing spree, but had only the two targets:
According to sources, the suspect advised them that he was going to kill as many Army personnel as possible. At the time of the shooting, the subject had approximately 200 rounds of ammunition available, police said.
According to a police report, Muhammad told police he saw two uniformed U.S. soldiers in front of the recruiting office before he shot and killed Pvt. William Long, 23, and wounded Pvt. Quinton Ezeagwula, 18, while they were taking a break outside the U.S. Army recruiting station where they both worked.
The police found no explosives in the car, but they discovered that Muhammad/Bledsoe meant business. He had two pistols and an SKS rifle, over a hundred rounds of ammunition, and vests to hold the clips. Muhammad wanted to take out as many military personnel he could find before anyone could catch him.
The FBI and its JTTT will have to answer some questions about when exactly they intended to intervene. Muhammad/Bledsoe got arrested in Yemen for traveling on a Somali passport, which triggered the FBI’s interest in him in the first place. It seems likely that he came back from his Islamic studies in the terrorist hotbed of Yemen with this mission in mind, and yet the FBI didn’t act until he killed someone.
Law enforcement has its place in civil maintenance of the peace. The terrorists are waging war against us, not crime waves. The Bush administration learned that lesson the hard way on 9/11 after eight years of flabby response from the Clinton administration after the first World Trade Center attack. If we’re not careful, we’ll find ourselves back in that flabby, self-indulgent “what war?” mode, and disaster will surely follow.

White House and DOJ Silent on Shooting of Soldiers
Jan LaRue
Why haven't the President and Attorney General of the United States been as quick to condemn the murder of one U.S. soldier and the wounding of another as they were in condemning the murder of an abortionist?

The White House released a statement condemning the shooting of late-term abortionist George Tiller within hours of the shooting on Sunday. President Barack Obama said:

"I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence."

Also within hours, attorney general Eric Holder issued a similar statement:

"The murder of Doctor George Tiller is an abhorrent act of violence, and his family is in our thoughts and prayers at this tragic moment. The Department of Justice will work to bring the perpetrator of this crime to justice."

Holder also announced that he had "dispatched the U.S. Marshals Service to protect "appropriate people and facilities around the nation" in the wake of the murder of late-term abortion provider Dr. George Tiller in Wichita, Kansas on Sunday morning."

Monday, police in Little Rock, Ark. arrested a Muslim on charges of murdering a U.S. soldier and wounding another after opening firing at the U.S. Army Navy Career Center in Little Rock.

According to Lt. Terry Hastings with the Little Rock Police Department, two people standing outside the office were hit when the unidentified suspect drove up and began shooting. Both of the wounded were taken to a nearby hospital, where one of the victims died a short time later, according to police

According to KATV, Little Rock:

According to Pulaski County Coroner Garland Camper, 23-year-old William Long of Conway died shortly after being transported to a Little Rock hospital.

At a briefing Monday afternoon, Little Rock police chief Stuart Thomas identified the suspect as Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad, 24, of Little Rock. Thomas says Muhammad also goes by the name Carlos Bledsoe.

Hastings identified the second wounded soldier as Quinton Ezeagwula, age unknown. He remains at a local hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sweetness & Light is asking, "Where is Mr. Obama's statement denouncing this murder? Where are the US marshals to protect the recruiting centers? Indeed, where is the media coverage?"

Excellent questions, especially since there have been other attacks on recruiting centers.

Although the shootings occurred at 10:00 a.m. Monday morning, as of midnight Monday, neither the White House nor the Department of Justice had issued any statements about the shootings of the soldiers.

And don't hold your breath waiting for any anti-war and "moderate" Muslim organizations to condemn these "heinous acts of violence" against our military.

Every pro-life organization in the country issued statements condemning Tiller's murder within hours of his death.

Just incase anyone is wondering I love & support our Troops!!!!

As a serving member of the military I feel the loss of each of my brothers and sisters.

The acting president can go F*#K himself, nuff said.

Thanks a ton bro!

get a rope and a nice big tree and have a neck tie party. Any one killing and or wounding a member of our armed forces on our own soil should be exicuted immeditally and publically and any politican that is opposed to it can join in the party if the tree is'nt big enough then they can just wait for a turn on the line

Has any else noticed that after the abortion doctor was killed Obama demanded an increased police and FBI presence around abortion clinics, the news of the killing was front page on all news print, the news put it up front and ran all kinds of stories about the guy killed.

Yet a US service man was killed by a domestic terorrist and it doesn't even make NBC,ABC, or CNN news at ALL. It ran page 16 in the new york times.
Shows where the (what we so laughingly call) news has it's alegence.

I just heard yesterday on Fox (can't remember who) that they feared Bush, but they're not worried about Obama. No duhh.

Then with North Korea getting away with launching missiles left and right, they'll sell their stuff to Iran and since BHO says Iran has a legitimate need for nuclear power, guess what?

P.S. Good Frugal Cafe article Gainster.
