Re Gearing a 2004 Summit 800

Wanting to gear my 04 800 Summit down a bit to get some more low end power. I have a 19 tooth top gear and was wondering if it would make more sense to drop 1 or 2 teeth. And if there would be any issues with chain tightness or length. Do most of my riding in the Big Horns around 9000 feet. Any help will be great thanks guys.

I would not go smaller than a 19, better off going with a bigger bottom gear if you want to go lower.

What is the benefit of going with a bigger bottom gear vs smaller top gear? And how many teeth would you go up.

If you go any smaller on the top it will make the radius on the gear too small and it is hard on the chain as it makes for a big arch inbetween the gears. Bigger on the bottom is same as smaller on the top as it will gear it down and takes the slack out of the chain. Only go up one or 2 teeth max. 19/45 = 2.36 19/46 = 2.42 which is getting imo to be quite low.

I went with 19/46 while a friend went 19/47. The top speed is pretty close the same but the 47 has noticably more torque.

Went 19/47 on 04 summit 159. In my opinion it's the bomb. You can pull the skis easy if you want, and still does 95 mph. Maybe faster, but I quit at 95, don't like trees going by that fast, could hurt.

Macattack, how long ago did your friend change the gearing? And has all been well since?

Its been 3 years. We have both replaced the chain and gearing with the same stuff. Like topever mentioned, "its the bomb." Well worth the $$. Note: the clearance is tight with a 47 tooth gear. 47 is the largest you can install without affecting the case.

Well thanks for the input guys, I think I will be going with the 19/47 combo. Sounds the best, I want to get more low end out of it so that sounds good. Thanks again for the input.

I have an o4 rev 800 it has 19-43 gears on a 163. I could be wrong but I think if you want more torque or track speed on bottom end you go smaller stock is 19-45 bigger wheels equates to more top end. Could be wrong??
