Re-gear a M7?

I have a 2006 M7 162", and wondered if it would benefit me to gear down. What is the current gearing and what recommendations are out there to gear for riding in the mountains? I see the 2010 M8's really geared down, and I mainly ride in the mountains, from sea level to 5500 elevation.

i geared my 06 m7 162 to 54/66 and really like it in the ditches and on the river, but havnt had it on the hill yet. that is what bdx recomended. if you do it i would buy new bearings, 2 of them and they are the same, just because they looked like a beocth to get off and i didnt wanna take any chances.

m7 gearing

I would really like more information on gearing down, specifically the m7 162". I am planning on gear change this summer, I just want to pick the right set. I keep going back and forth between, 55/65 and 54/66.

I would like to know more about BDX recommendations, was it based on your riding style/area, your size/weight, or the actual sled and mods you had?

Anybody else out there gear down a M7 162? What did you notice as an improvement? Crisper bottom end, track speed, pulled harder?

Thanks for any info.

i geared my m7 153" down to 55/65, about 2 years ago and couldn't be happier. it pulls alot harder on the bottom end and is alot snapier than the stock geared m7s i ride with. track speed doesn't seem to have been affected much in either direction, still the same as i remember it always being. i also just ordered the 10.4" secondary sheeves to put on top of it mostly for the extra belt grip but it should give it even more bottom end. just waitin for them to show up.

With the 162 55/65 are great rather it be an M8 or M7. Makes the sled much more fun to ride. I tried gears lower than 55/65 at first but found that I lost to much track speed on the top. If you have a 141 the stock gears are great.

I geared mine down all the way to a 53/67 via BDX recommendations. Way too low. Pulled real hard down low, but only had 65mph top speed and did not hill climb any better-lost too much track speed. Ended up going back to stock. In my opinion I think the 54/66 would still be a little low. I am thinking of trying the 55/65s though cause I liked the low end snap and am looking to make my clutches shift a little further with less belt slipping. Probably go to the 10.4 clutch too to help reduce the slipping.

stock gearing

The stock gearing for m7's is 57/63. When you drop 1 tooth on small end, you add a tooth on the big end.

I went from stock to 53/67's as well and had the same results. Then went back to stock, but I missed the low end with the lower gears. So I ended up doing yet another gear change to 55/65's. I belive the 55/65's are the best of both worlds. Better low end than stock and still has good track speed in a climb.
