Deck on my Silverlake was getting pretty weathered so I picked up some newpoly from Mirage and re-decked it this weekend. Had a few challenges - the old decking was 1/2" and the new stuff was 3/4" (actually I think it is .70"). So I had to shim the edges of the retractable sides 1/4" - easy enough. Also, re-decking would take 3 sheets of material cause you have to buy full sheets. With 2 full sheets you only come out 5" (x 8' ) short of having enough. So it's pretty hard to justify buying that 3rd sheet! Mirage was great, they had some rem and gave me (2) 3 x 96" strips. That gave me enough to do the deck without buying 3 sheets. They also threw in a bunch of self drilling screws to put the deck on and those worked great.
Anyway- my old deck had cleats on it - I really don't want to put them on the new deck but can't decide if I am going to leave them off or put them back on. I know the newpoly is tuff but am worried I'll still tear it up over time. Also, the old deck they put the cleats 10" on center - seems like overkill. If I was going to put them back on I was thinking 12-14" would still keep the skis off the deck and will save a couple of cleats. Any comments? If I could get away with it, I would only put a couple where the skis sit when they are clamped down - and maybe 1 at the edge of the deck were you first ride on to protect the edge a little - but if you look close, I already capped those areas's with 1/8" thick angle aluminum.
