I am wondering about rebuilding the engine, clutch, and any other parts that need replaced. Amy ideas how much this might cost? Any suggestions? 1800 miles and I just want to avoid problems.
Well sounds like you are in for a project! I did all of the above on my old 600 zx summit a few years ago. The motor was the mose expensive. About 1200 bucks at the local shop. Most of the cost was in parts as i did all of the engine removal myself. If you do rebuild the engine i would reccomend that you at least take apart the bottom end and look at it. I had a couple of "spun" bearings. dosent cost much more. The clutched are not too expensive. Mostly just a couple of bushings and a few plastic sliders. I put about 200 into both of mine. You can do it in you garage with minimal tools just make sure you put them back the way they were. Did all the clutches my self. Make sure you put the new bushings in with locktite. They will come out if you dont. I would take a look at the drive shaft bearings. They are not too expensive if you consider the cost of a new drive shaft or chaincase. Dont overlook the chain and gears as well. Broken chain usually means broken gear case and a tow out. Thats about it for the mechanical. check all the bushings in the front stearing and suspension while you have the motor out. Think thats about it. Good luck!!!
You should only need to do the top end (ie rings). As far as clutching, I am no expert but clean it every year. Chain case is a great reminder above.
The bottom end of your engine should be good for now. Mine just blew with about the same miles but it sounds like that was a fluke.
