Racing Mowers! I know they're out there!

How many of you just cant resist your need for speed during the summer months and cant help but race your mower? Me and my dad have been doing it for 3 years now. Extremely fun sport to get in to. here are some pictures. Orange mower is my dads, Black/Red is mine.

actually in some of the mod classes snowmobile motors are pretty common. usually 80's model 340's, and some of those will do upwards 60-70 mph, there are ones that can hit faster than that but we dont usually bring them in around here.

Mine is an 8 horse stock motor with a custom pipe, and with the gearing i have i can hit about 35-40 down the road in 5th gear.

I think my dads will do about the same, his is a 10 horse stock. His will do doughnuts in the yard though... I havent quite mastered that yet haha.

Sweet! Anyone put a sled engine on one of those? A 550 fan would be a killer powerplant for a lawnmower!

A guy in the next town down the road from mine back home put an XLT motor on one. Took it out on the highway, got clocked at 80+ by Po po, and they told him to take it home and never bring it out on the road again or he was getting arrested.

we have into them as much money as it costs to buy...

2 belts
a few pulleys
maybe a spark plug or two?
4 or 5 cans of spray paint
1 rebuild kit for mine

the time to set up the throttle/killswitch/tether systems...
not really anything too complicated.
we got the original Ariens bodies for free, motors for free, all metal fabricated done for free (My dad happens to be a very good fabricator)

most people dont run the ariens bodies like we do though. With the higher sitting front motor lawn mowers there isnt so much fabricating to do. however we prefer the "rider forward" design for more control LOL :face-icon-small-win

Looks like a blast. Any zero turns racing? HA HA, just kidding.

I wouldn't mind tinkering with a mower like that or making a bar stool racer.

If you can hit 35-40mph with an 8hp engine, how quick is it out of the hole? Isn't the stock gearing setup for 7mph or something close to that? What did you change your gearing to? Sounds like fun...not sure if I need another project though......or do I?

You can take the Vette down with work Jonce! Just leave the keg off the back.

Check these guys out!

We have a group here in Idaho who goes all over and races.... check out their website - http://www.outlawlawndragsters.com They are working on getting more pics and videos up.

Most of these machines are running sled or motorcycle motors. The orange one is running an 800 poo motor - was built by Bill Loftin from Wilderness Sports in New Plymouth, Idaho. It will run under 2 seconds in 200 feet, which is how far they race. Notice most of them have wheelie bars too! This guy also builds some really FAST turbo sleds!

:) 2fun
