Racheting or ?????

2011 M-8 162 SNO-PRO I out it in reverse on flat ground yesterday and it started making a grinding noise that sounded like it was coming from the diamond drive and wasn't moving very well. I put it in forward and same thing. I turned it off and on and went in forward with no problems.

Rode all day with no symptoms, but it started again at the end of the day both time after I put it in reverse on flat ground. I drained the diamond drive and pulled the cover expecting to find a bad bearing or missing teeth.

Everything looked good and the bearings were fine. The last owner had just installed a new track so I thought about ratcheting, but I climbed hard all day with no ratcheting and I've never had a sled ratchet on level ground and that track doesn't look to be very loose.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

belt got sucked into the secondary. the next time it does it, stop, open the hood, and look where the belt is in the secondary, i'll bet a buck, it is not at the top. Ski

center shaft bushing, spring, just plain dirty. might have wrong cam in the secondary. could be several things. what is the current clutch set up front and rear, and what is the gearing? all stock? how many miles?

sometimes the belts and clutches get hot, and the secondary doesnt close all the way after letting off the throttle, and the belt sticks in the secondary. when you take off, you get what you had happen. Ski

Opening and closing the sheaves manually it seemed to grind a little going back and forth from locking in reverse then moving to forward. I pulled the cover and spring and couldn't see anything obviously bad.

Guess I should go ahead and unscrew the helix and look at the rest of it while it's apart. There is already one thick and one thin shim on it and I don't know why the deflection would change without something else changing to throw it off.

Might want to check your motor mounts. They could be letting the engine tip when in reverse and you are getting belt chatter.

I was thinking about that as well. I looked them over and they all look good. It doesn't appear to be vibrating abnormally.

I put the diamond drive back together with new fluid, but I couldn't get the cover back on secondary without a press so I'll get that back together tomorrow hopefully find a set of shims and make sure the deflection is right on.

It's had a very distinct bog just off idle. It has an SLP exhaust set-up with the power commander. It shouldn't be rich or lean so I'm thinking the bog has something to do with what is going on in the clutching.

That cover should go on easily!! IF you have to press it on something is not is place! Better get a good look.

I was referring to the spring plate on the face of the secondary, I used to put them back together on my 900 with just a bit of grunt, but the twist and push on the CPC set-up is a stretch.

It would appear the first "deflection" from rdr99 was correct. I got my hands on a press and got the secondary all the way apart. It was a bit dirty, but no problems. Cleaned it up and reassembled, put it back on and found the deflection was very loose. I added another thin shim and checked again 1 1/8". Ran it in and out of forward and reverse several times and spun the track and no binding.

On the bright side the fluid in the DD was certainly in need of changing so it wasn't all for not. I appreciate all the input hopefully it'll all be good after a ride this weekend.

I thought I had this fixed. With an extra thin shim the deflection was a little tight, but the belt wasn't making any noise at idle. I took it for a ride with no symptoms. In and out of reverse up and down hills and everything else with no problems.

Yesterday I was moving it around on the grass and it went right back to doing it. I looked at it while the clutches while it was making noise and the secondary clutch sheaves were stuck open at idle making the belt way to loose. I had the secondary completely apart and couldn't see anything bad any ideas what would be wrong to cause this??

Thanks

too much traction, too much throttle, the belt sucks into the secondary. it happeneds. be easier on the gas when in the grass. Ski

If your getting a grinding noise you have a problem for sure you need to find what's grinding
