wondering how long race fuel is good for in a un-opened drum? i bought a drum in march and hoping it still good. i have heard 18 months.

If it is unopened I've heard indefineatly? Don't know for sure though. It's when it is opened and esposed to air that it starts to degrade.

If you call VP (or whoever) in a SEALED drum, a long time, definitely longer than the 18 months you're at

i was told that if i took mine out of the plastic drum and put it in metal sealed container it would be fine... i still worry. anybody else have experience with this? is there somewhere to have it tested. the fuel company tech person told me that it would be fine stored over summer in metal tank. we build our own tanks so i used a stainless tank that we had laying around

It sits for probably months or longer before you but it anyway most manufacturers of fuel remove oxygen and replace it with nitrogen along with keeping it in a metal drum so that light ends (a form of uv rays) that deplets octane and fuel quality it should keep for a very long time. They even make kits for home use to replace the oxygen in your drums with nitrogen after you have opened and not used all the fuel inside

consistent temp also aids in longevity and keeping barrel full
when the barrel gets down 10- 15 gals move it to a smaller container with minimal air in it

AVGAS has a better storage life than Race fuel. I just keep mine in the corner of the garage and whenever I go to the next town I snag 10 gallons and put it in the metal race fuel barrels and snug the plug tight.

I have a drum of vp 111 sitting in my garage from last xmas, opened, refilled and I am not even concerned about the octane level.Should be fine. I was told 2 yrs by vp if in a steel container in a cool place out of the sun.

I have heard that the following will help with race fuel:

-Metal container
-Controlled temperature (cooler is better)
-No oxygen in the container, or keep them as full as possible or use a smaller container
-out of direct sunlight (less of an issue in a metal drum than say a plastic gas can).

How about a full sled tank with race fuel? Should I dump it?
How about a 55 gal drum that has 40 gal of race fuel? Any good?
CRAP!!!!!!!

A full tank is always better than half empty. But your tank is plastic, not real sure.

Was the sled stored indoors? The temperature change from warming up, cooling down causes moisture to build up. That is why the less air in the container the better.

I was talking to a vp rep a few yes ago at an sx race an they had a 5 gal drum of c12 he'd been testing twice a year for the last 4 years and the differences they were getting each test was so small it have been the variance in the testing equipment. As long as u keep it in a steel container and at a reasonably constant temp. Fuels like u2 and u4 which are oxygenated will go bad faster and u need to flush ur carbs out with reg gas after running them because they have an additive that leave a gummy residue when they evaporate and it clogs your jets up.

Mike I think you better play it safe and sell that drum of bad fuel to me for 1/2 price and go buy a new one.Just to be safe....:biggrin1:
Good news hear that this stuff stays good for that long a time.

naw i think im good. its been stored in the garage which is temp contolled at 78 deg all summer with less tham 50% humidity in a nice corner with no sun. im feeling pretty safe.
