Quick cam timing help

Hey guys, need assistance with the timing on this nytro. .060 head shim, split gasket. The sled was together before, intake cam gear slotted, but I can't seem to get solid info online searching. The shim rolls the cams advanced? Then the slotting of the intake cam puts it "strait up"?
Am I close in my thinking?
And I assume that the cam marks and flywheel marks won't line up perfect?

Thanks guys
Brian

Check the threads

Check the threads on here posted by Powderlites, ...or that other Yamaha forum has a detailed explanation as well.

Basically, ....and this is the quick version, ..be sure your piston is on TDC, then use stock gear on intake, no slotting, then retard the intake cam one tooth. Then with a slotted gear on the exhaust cam, advance it. Powderlites was nice enough to post a pic of what the cam timing looks like with his tool in use.

You really should get set up properly, get an understanding of what you are doing, use a degree. Do it right, this is no place to be close!! Pay attention with the cam chain tensioner!! If you are not experienced with this scenario, I would recommend a shop that is, ..again close enough doesn't exist here, too much at stake. Big difference on an engine with properly set up valve timing.

Good luck.

I appreciate that. I realize a degree wheel is the most legit way to go about this, but it seems 90% of people do not, they just go with the kits recommendations. This motor was up and running with the same setup, but I was in too big of a hurry to eyeball the cam gears before tear down.
From what I have read, mcx, PL, and alpine all have different timing ideas, so I thought it might be a little easier. My exhaust cam sprocket was unmodded, intake was/is clocked.
Thanks CR
